“You have time to sleep.” I press my lips to the crown of her head and smile when she snuggles deeper into my hold and doesn’t make a move to get off me to go clean up. One thing I’ve learned since we broke the seal on sex is she has no issues with the parts of it that are messy. In fact, I bet if I asked her, she’d say she likes having me inside her like this, and fuck if I’m not addicted to that too.

When I hear her soft snore, I carefully move out from under her, then tuck the blankets around her and grab my sweats from the floor. After putting them on, I head to the bathroom and clean up, then go to the kitchen to get my cell. I want to take her with me to check on my dad, but there is no way I’m going to do that without giving him a heads-up.

I’m sure my mother has made her feelings about May well known, and I don’t want her subjected to any more fucking drama brought on by my family. She doesn’t deserve that, and there is no way I’ll ever put her in a situation again where she’s made to feel like she’s less than, when she’s so much better than anyone I’ve ever met in my life.

Finding Marla’s number in my cell, I listen to it ring as I pour myself a cup of coffee.

“Hi, Aiden,” Marla answers, sounding like she’s laughing.

“Hey, Marla, is my dad up?”

“He is. Let me put you on speaker,” she says, then the phone goes quiet for a moment.

“Aiden,” my dad says a second later, his voice not sounding as strong as it used to, but drastically better than it did just a few weeks ago.

“Hey, Dad.” I take my coffee with me to the back door and open it for both dogs to go out, and they immediately run outside, across the small deck, and down the steps into the fully fenced backyard that was completed just yesterday. A week before scheduled, because I paid three grand extra for the guys to get the job done. “I’m going to stop by today but wanted to give you a heads-up, because I’m bringing May with me, and I need you to be nice while we’re there.”

“Oh…” He clears his throat. “Okay,” he says after a long moment, then the line goes silent, and I wonder if we got disconnected.

“Aiden,” Marla says, sounding like she’s moving around, “we’ll see you when you get here.”

“All right, thanks, Marla.”

“Yep,” she replies quietly. “Bye, honey.”

“Bye.” I frown at my phone, then bite back a curse when my cell rings and my sister’s number pops up on the screen. I don’t want to answer it, but with her never calling me, I slide my finger across the screen.

“Bridgett,” I answer, hearing someone crying as I put the call on speaker. “What happened?”

“I… I left Conner,” she sobs. “I n-need to go somewhere. I… I can’t be here when he gets b-back.”

“Where are you now?”

“In my car, i-in our drive-driveway. He… he said he w-was going for a drive.”

“All right, take a breath and calm down. You don’t need to be driving while you’re so upset. Let me get dressed, and I’ll come pick you up. I haven’t been staying at my place. You can stay there.”

“Thank… thank you.” She sniffles.

“I’ll be there soon. Just sit tight.”

“Hurry,” she whispers.

“I will.” I hang up the call and start to turn for the bedroom but stop when I find May standing in the middle of the living room with a blanket wrapped around her.

“I’ll go with you. You can drive her car, and I’ll drive mine.”

“Thanks, baby,” I whisper, overwhelmed that after the way my sister treated her, she’s still willing to help her out. With a nod, she turns for the bedroom, and we both hurry to get dressed and are in her car in less than ten minutes.

When we pull up to my sister’s house, I lean over to kiss May, then hop out of her car and head to the driver side door of my sister’s Mercedes. When I knock on the window, her puffy red eyes meet mine through the glass, and even though we don’t get along, I fucking despise seeing her so upset.

“Hey.” I open her door, then accept her weight as she falls against me.

“He wants a divorce,” she whispers, then she starts to laugh, which freaks me the fuck out. “He’s cheated on me constantly since we got together, but he is the one who asked me for a divorce.” She crumbles in my arms and begins to sob and I wonder why she said she left him earlier if he’s the one who asked her for a divorce. “I ha-hate him s-so much.”
