I want his attention.

I want his eyes on me.

I want to grind on him for as long as he’ll let me.

I want him.

“What do you want, Firecracker?” he asks as though reading my mind. He rests his forehead against mine, and the act is intimate, which lights my desire for him to where the flames are burning so high, I’m not sure we’ll ever be able to extinguish them.

“You,” I whisper, but he hears me. His intake of breath tells me he does. It could also be the way his hand on the small of my back grips the back of my shirt. I imagine that being in my hair and heat pools between my thighs.

Correction. More heat pools between my thighs. The panties I put on this morning are ruined. Soaked. So much so that I wouldn’t be surprised if the evidence were not all over his thigh. Thankfully he’s wearing black dress pants.

He leans in close, his lips a breath from mine. He’s going to kiss me. I want him to kiss me. He hovers there, just out of reach. I could close the distance, erase the small gap between his lips and mine, but he needs to work for it. He leans in a little closer, and instead of the kiss I was anticipating, he speaks.

“You want to get out of here?” His hot breath floats across my skin, and I try not to let my disappointment of not getting a kiss show.

“Yes.” There is zero hesitation in my reply. One-night stands are not something that I indulge in often. In fact, it’s been far too long since I’ve been with anyone. However, I’ve always been one to follow my gut, and my gut tells me that not only is Archer Kincaid a good guy, but that he knows his way around a woman’s body.

I shiver at the thought.

“Did you drive here?”

“I did.”

“We can leave it here. I’ll bring you back tomorrow.”

“I’d rather drive to yours if that’s okay. I have almost everything I own in my car. I’m staying at a hotel for now. I was waiting to see if I got the job before I looked for something more permanent.”

He stands to his full height and nods. “Fine. Where’s your stuff?”

“In the back room.” I nod toward the door that leads to the kitchen area.

“I need to say goodbye to my family. Meet me at the back door?”

“Okay.”

“Don’t go out without me. It’s late and dark out.”

“I’ve been taking care of myself for a long time,” I tell him.

He nods. “That might be true, but tonight, you’re going home with me. You’re going to be in my bed, coming on my tongue, my hands, and my cock. Tonight, you let me look out for you.”

I open my mouth to argue but quickly close it. I don’t want to argue. One night of letting someone else take on the responsibility, make the choices, and worry about me, sounds almost too good to be true. It’s been a long time since I’ve been with a man. It’s been even longer since I’ve had someone who wanted to look out for me.

Sure, there’s my best friend, Natasha, but she’s married and settled down in Idaho, my home state. She and I talk all the time, and we video chat, but she’s not here. She worries, but it’s hard to do much else living in a different state.

“Okay.”

Archer removes the hand that was holding me by the back of my neck and traces his knuckle over my cheek. “So pretty and so agreeable.”

“It’s the arm porn,” I blurt.

He tosses his head back and laughs. It’s a deep, rich sound that wraps around me like a warm winter blanket. Not just any blanket. One that’s been recently laundered and fresh out of the dryer. It’s nice and warm and soothing.

“Ten minutes.”

“You’re going to say goodbye to all of these people in ten minutes?” I raise a questioning brow.

“Yes. I have a good incentive.” He winks, and I’m thankful he’s holding on to me because the action causes my knees to go weak. He leans in and presses his lips to my forehead. “Nine minutes,” he murmurs.

He releases me from his hold, turns, and walks away. I’m not ashamed to admit that I stand here for several long heartbeats and watch him go. He reaches his brother and his new wife, and I know that I need to get moving. I’ve had a few one-night stands. None of them have ever had me this worked up.

I spot Palmer in the corner, and my feet carry me in that direction.

“I’m going to head out,” I tell her when I reach them. I offer my finger to her daughter, who smiles as she curls up into her daddy’s chest.

“Be safe. Do you need a ride?” she asks.
