“The same people that take care of her when I’m there,” he grumbles.

“What does that mean?”

“The girls watch after her,” he shrugs.

“The…you let the club girls watch her?”

“Why not? I figure they know more than I do,” he mutters, and I don’t think I’m imagining how uncomfortable this topic is making him.

“Why not…”

“Red—”

“Luke, I made a mistake,” I murmur. “I need you to turn around and take me back home.”

“The hell I will.”

“You’re not listening to me. I can’t do this.”

“I’m hearing you just fine. You just aren’t making any sense. You’re already doing this. You’re not running away from me now.”

“You’re misunderstanding me. I don’t want to be with you anymore. It’s clear we’re too different.”

“What the fuck are you talking about now?” he questions angrily, then he shocks me even more by yanking the truck hard to the right and going off the road without slowing down. He slams his brakes so hard that my body propels forward, even with the seatbelt. I brace myself against the dashboard as we careen into the overgrown grass away from the main road.

“What is your damage? Are you trying to get us killed?” I cry, my heart beating so hard that I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t beat out of my chest.

“I’m trying to figure out why you keep trying to invent reasons to be pissed at me,” he roars, and I snap. I don’t need this shit. I thought Luke was special and it turns out he’s just a moron.

I quickly undo my seatbelt, almost simultaneously opening the door and then jumping out of his truck. I’ll walk to the nearest store and then have my father come and get me. I’ll take hearing what horrible choices I make over this shit any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Except, I barely make it two feet in front of the truck when Luke’s hand wraps around my waist and he drags me back against his hard body, pulling me to the side of the truck. He pins me between him and the truck. I swallow down my nerves as I get a look at the anger shining in his eyes.

Shit.

Grunt

I pin Jasmine up against my truck. I’ve had enough of this bullshit. I was hoping to wait until we got home to have this out, but if she wants to be a bitch, then I can show her how big of a bastard I can be.

I grab her wrists, holding them behind her, refusing to let her move an inch.

“Let me go!” she hisses.

“Not on your fucking life. We’re going to have this out once and for all. And I’m warning you Jasmine, you’re going to quit running away from me.”

“The hell I am! We’re done!”

“Baby, we aren’t done, we’re nowhere close to that.”

“That’s where you’re wrong. I’m never going to be with a man who doesn’t even want to take care of his own daughter!”

I stare at her stunned.

“What the fuck are you talking about, woman? I love Daisy.”

“Yeah, right,” she responds, disdain on her face, her voice full of derision.

“You haven’t even met her, but you think you’re qualified to make judgments on what kind of father I am?”

“She sleeps at a club with twinkies taking care of her, instead of her father who is off fucking a woman who is good enough to be in his bed but not meet his daughter. That’s all the information I need, Grunt.”

“Jesus Christ. You give me a damn headache, Red. First you’re pissed because of Daisy and now you’re pissed because you don’t think I take care of her.”

“I don’t think, I know. How did your parents take care of you? If you tell me they left you alone with twinkies to raise you, I’m calling you a fucking liar.”

“What the hell is a twinkie?”

She blinks, her face is glowing in anger. If I wasn’t so pissed at her I’d enjoy it.

“A club whore!”

“I thought you said you weren’t part of the Devil’s Blaze,” I respond, starting to catch on that little Jasmine here knows exactly how a club works. I should have seen it from the beginning. Damn, maybe I am as stupid as she accuses me of being.

“I’m not,” she says, her eyes narrowing. “That doesn’t mean I’m stupid to the way clubs run. Gabby and I have been friends for a lot of years,” she responds, and I guess she’s right about that. Still, something tells me that my Red is keeping some major secrets.

“My club has good women in it.”

“I’m sure it does,” she snaps.

“And Sledge’s old lady looks out for Daisy when I’m not there. Hell, they know more about raising a girl than I do. I don’t see the problem,” I grumble.

She goes still again, not talking, and I figure that I somehow fucked up yet again. So, I wait, because I’m sure Jasmine will tell me soon enough.
