For a man who’s always talking, I’m suddenly very quiet.

She turns to run after him and I almost grab her to keep her here.

“Wait!” I call out. “What’s your name?”

“Adalynn. And you?”

“Remy.”

We stare at each other for a long moment. She turns to run, but I call out again, stopping her. “Hold on!”

Those stunning brown eyes are back on mine. I can barely breathe with the intensity of her gaze on me.

“He’s dangerous, ma chérie,” I say as I stare at her in awe. “There’s no brothers and sisters with feral bears.”

“He won’t hurt me. I know it.”

I’m glad she trusts her brother, but I’m not about to trust a feral bear around my mate. Never in a million fucking years.

“Remy!” Jackson shouts from somewhere in front of the building. “Where the fuck are you?!”

They won’t hesitate to kill her brother if they find him. This girl’s stunning brown eyes aren’t going to do the same kind of voodoo magic on them that they’re doing on me. She only has this kind of sway over me because she’s my mate and I don’t want her to hate me.

“Meet me later,” I say in a desperate tone. “Tonight.”

She sucks in a breath, looks behind her, and then looks at me with a nod. “Okay. The corner of Wilkshire and Brown. Do you know it?”

“I’ll find it. And I’ll be there.”

“Nine o’clock.”

We stare at each other for a long moment, neither of us wanting it to end. Finally, she tears her beautiful eyes away and runs in the direction of her brother.

I suck in a sharp breath and run around the building.

“Remy!” Jackson shouts when he sees me. “Where is he?”

“That way!” I say, pointing in the wrong direction.

“Grayson, Ryker!” Jackson shouts as he starts running. The two bears burst out of the haunted house and follow our team leader.

I glance behind me, hoping she’s okay, and then follow my boys toward the roller coaster.

They’re frantically looking around for him. Minutes pass like they’re dragging on for years.

Grayson explodes out of his polar bear with a frustrated look on his face. “He’s not here. There’s no scent.”

I swallow hard as he rears on me. “Why did you bring us here?”

Jackson steps between us as he charges over. “Easy, Grayson. Remy’s not lying.” He turns to me and his face drops. “Are you, Remy?”

That should be enough time for mon petit oiseau to escape.

Ryker changes into his human form and all three of them are staring at me in disbelief.

“Why did you let him go?” Ryker asks. He looks more confused than angry.

This is not like me at all. I’m the one who’s supposed to hate feral bears the most. I’m the one who has a hard-on for exterminating them.

“Remy?” Jackson says, still not wanting to believe it. “Did you let him go?”

“I did,” I say. They all stare at me like I’ve grown a second head.

“But… why?” Jackson says in a breathless tone.

“My mate was here,” I say, still not believing it. It feels so surreal. Did that really happen? I’m still in shock. “And that mad bear was her brother.”

Grayson and Ryker storm away.

Jackson just shakes his head as he stares at me. “We have to talk.”

Sirens ring out. The cops are coming.

He sighs as he starts running after the boys. “But first, we have to get out of here.”

I sheath my sword and run after them with a smile on my lips.

I finally found my mate.

And I’m meeting her tonight!

Chapter Four

Adalynn

Nathan is looking up at me with his big adorable brown eyes as I tuck him in bed. He’s still shaken from the rough day.

“Do you want to talk about it?” I ask him.

His little brain is turning. “Is my bear going to be like that one day?”

“No,” I say with a warm smile. “You’re going to grow up and meet your mate and everything will be just perfect.”

He looks at the ceiling as he thinks about it. “But my dad met Mommy and it wasn’t perfect for him.”

I sigh as I look at his conflicted face. It’s so tragic. My brother was ecstatic when he finally found his mate, Valerie. They had an amazing weekend together, which resulted in this little guy, but when Valerie’s strict religious parents found out, they forbid her to be with him. They told her that shifters were demons and they convinced her to ignore her heart and raise the child with them.

It broke my brother and it destroyed his bear.

“Well, it will be perfect for you,” I say as I kiss his little forehead. “Get some sleep. We can talk about it in the morning if you’d like.”

“Over French toast?”

“You know it! With extra maple syrup?”

He smiles wide. “I can’t wait.”

I kiss him again, turn off his light, and head into the living room.
