“I’m booked solid for the next three months!” my dad exclaims to Brandon, who’s trying hard to look excited for my dad.

“…And that eh…client of yours? The one who collects all those vintage cars, guess who he wants to be maintaining them all?” Dad asks excitedly.

“That’s great news, Steve. I’m glad I could…,” Brandon says, but dad’s on a roll.

He’s re-hiring the mechanics he’s laid off. He’s gonna ‘expand the business.’ He’s gonna do better than ever from now on.

He’s gonna….

He’s gonna make me puke if he keeps going on about it.

“Dad,” I finally say, talking over him to get his attention.

“Yeah, sweetie, what is it?” he asks, holding his thought so he can keep telling Brandon all about his fresh business plans.

“Nothing.” I smile. “But are you gonna stick around, or do you still have that tractor to fix?” I ask, wondering if Brandon and I will get any time alone now.

And we haven’t even thought about what’s gonna happen when it’s time to go to bed.

“Oh, yeah. Thanks, honey, but I’ve got Leon going out to do it now. Boy! Is he glad to have his old job back!” Dad exclaims loudly, beaming up at Brandon.

His admiration for Brandon makes me feel like I’m not the only one who thinks he’s pretty amazing, which he is to a lot of people.

But to me, he’s the only one.

“You’ve done the hunting and gathering,” my dad proclaims, eyeing off all the meat and groceries we’ve only just started to unload.

“So I’ll start making us all a feast to celebrate,” he announces, asking me if I can finish bringing in the groceries while he and Brandon ‘catch up.’

Essentially singling me out of the conversation.

If it was a day or two ago, and I hadn’t just lived through the best twenty-four hours of my life with Brandon? Sure. I wouldn’t mind.

But I hadn’t counted on dad being home early, nor did I count on him hijacking my man as soon as he saw him again.

I look to Brandon for help, but he only shrugs. Making such a strange face when my dad’s not looking that I can’t help but giggle.

Instantly forgiving all of us for being in this crazy situation.

I do what my dad asks, leaving out things he calls for that he’ll need to amaze us with his cooking skills. But once all that’s done, I’m left awkwardly hanging out in my kitchen. I feel miles away from Brandon right now. Maybe I should just go to my room.

No time to feel bad about it, though.

Brandon’s stern look when I glance toward my bedroom down the hall is enough to tell me he wants me right where he can see me.

“I might just go change,” I tell the room, knowing my dad’s not paying attention, still talking a million miles a minute to Brandon, who gives a little nod of approval.

I haven’t seen dad this excited, ever.

Whatever Brandon did has done the trick to help dad out, but are we really going to have to hear about it all night?

It feels like we are.

By the time I change clothes, trying to look nice but not dressy for Brandon, my dad stops long enough to notice me for a change.

“Sorry, honey. I’ve just been so pumped all day. And I’ve just gotta talk to the man who made it all happen,” he explains, shooting Brandon another glowing look.

“Don’t let me do all the talking, though, and don’t worry about skipping tutoring today. I already spoke to the professor,” he adds, making my heart freeze in my chest.

“So? What have you two been up to all day?” he asks, snapping off a celery stalk from one of the brown paper sacks, crunching it loudly as he leans back against the counter.

Now, he’s all ears to know what it is that Brandon and I have been up to today.

He looks from me to Brandon, and I can feel my mouth just hanging open.

I’m waiting for Brandon to save us both, which he does without effort.

“I had May help me run some errands, we did some grocery shopping, and then she showed me around town,” he says.

And none of it is a lie.

Dad’s brow creases with attention as he listens, already looking bored if he can’t keep talking about his own good news.

Brandon does skip some parts, though, including when he had me on all fours, swearing like a pirate as he took me from behind to my third glorious climax in less than twenty-four hours.

I’m sure dad wouldn’t be interested in that!

But once Brandon suggests I help him out like I did today more often, especially with all the plans Brandon has for his new house, it’s starting to sound more like a job offer than anything else.

“Well, it’s up to you, May,” my dad says thoughtfully after thinking a moment. Not even a hint of suspicion in his voice anymore.
