There’s one more kiss before we sneak out. Well, no. There’s another stolen kiss out in the hall before she runs to her next class, me watching her until she glances over her shoulder and smiles at me before disappearing around the corner.

…I think I’m in trouble.

Because I’m not just fooling around with Ramona Weiss. I’m not just into her. I’m not just having fun with a girl I’m falling for. No, I am full-blown, no breaks, no steering-wheel, come-what-may in love with Ramona.

And if that’s a problem, the world can take it up with me.

Ramona

“Hey, there she is! Ooo! Ms. Bateman, would you sign my shirt?”

Zara, one of my best friends, rolls her eyes as she sinks into the seat at the table next to me.

“You are so weird, dude.”

I snort a laugh. “Aww c’mon! How often do you get to make jokes about your best friend newly backing a freaking rockstar?”

Zara’s dark eyes roll again as she tucks her blonde hair back. In the token Winchester uniform, you’d never know Zara to be anything but, well, kind of a nerd. The quiet demeanor, the thick-rimmed glasses, the grade point average almost as high as mine. But, when she lets her hair down, Zara really lets her hair down. She’s actually a crazy gifted musician and song writer, and as of late, her and her new band, Chasing Glory, just won the Rockland County Battle of the Bands, which is a huge freaking deal.

It’s also a huge deal that the three other band members are three of the hottest, most popular guys on the football team, and around here, Raiders players are basically royalty.

And then, it’s also a huge deal that Zara happens to be with all three of them.

…With as in with, if you get what I mean. It’s all quite scandalous to me, but at the same time, I’m so happy for her. She’s clearly living in some sort of blissful dreamworld these days—and I mean, who wouldn’t be with three guys like Anders Teller, Griffin Reeves, and Carson Lafayette worshiping you and treating you like their freaking queen.

The whole thing is very hush-hush to most people, of course. We might live in a progressive time, but no one want the drama of having to finish high school explaining to everyone that, yes, they are dating three guys at the same time. Guys who share. So, on the surface, Zara is “officially” dating Griffin. Behind closed doors though?

I blush.

Well, behind closed doors, I can only imagine the acrobatically wild stuff those four get up to.

“And how is my newest rockstar friend doing today?”

She grins. “Oh, are we newly friends? Here I was thinking we’d known each other for four years.”

“We’re newly friends with you being a rockstar,” I wink.

She rolls her eyes again. “Dude, it’s just a Battle of the Bands.”

“Yeah, the biggest one on the East Coast and one that’s watched by a ton of music industry types. And you guys killed it!

She grins, shrugging awkwardly. “I mean, I guess we did okay.”

“You won, dude.”

Her grin widens as she blushes. “Okay, I guess we did.”

“Like, crushed it.”

She beams at me. “Thanks. And thanks for being there, too.”

The Battle of the Bands was a few weeks ago and involved the four of them sneaking off campus to attend. And what sort of friend would I have been if I hadn’t snuck out to go watch them, too?

“Any time. I’m just glad I got Anastasia and Kempton to come too, or I’d have chickened out.”

Ana and Kempton are two girls from the varsity cheer team I’m also friends with. I dunno, I guess some people go through sticking to their own clique—the art kids with the art kids, the jocks with the jocks, the goth types with the other goth types. You know how it goes. But me? Maybe it’s just that I’ve always had my fingers in lots of pies, what with doing model UN, and debate team, and orchestra, and also cheerleading.

Zara’s eyes go wide suddenly

“Oh my God, I totally just remembered that I forget to bring this up!” she hisses.

“What?”

She grins mischievously.

“At the show, backstage, did you notice anything with Kempton?”

My eyes fly wide open.

“Oh my God, yes!” I grin hugely.

“You saw it too!”

I nod, my brows arching high.

Kempton Carlisle is the captain of the varsity cheer squad, and while she’s definitely got a reputation as kind of the “head bitch” of Winchester, I know now it’s all an act. She’s actually great, and I’m ninety-percent sure the whole mystery surrounding the rumors of her always dating older, rich guys with yachts and penthouses is all just a fabrication on her part. As it happens, she’s currently dating Beckett Truman, the Raiders star quarterback and general king of the school. Except, at the battle of the bands…
