“You might as well come on in here.” She was wearing one of my old shirts. Where the fuck did she get that? I know she didn’t go snooping around my shit. Before I could take her nosy ass to task she went after ma. Like I needed this shit.

Her hand went to her hip and she leaned in. “You don’t know me old lady, you call me bitch one more time I’ll flatten you.” I grabbed her around the throat and pushed her back. “Wrong fucking move little girl.” She took one look at my face and knew that I was pissed. She swallowed hard and looked over my shoulder at the wall.

“Ma cut it out.” She’d stood up from her chair and was ready to lay into the kid. I knew very well how she felt about this family, I’d heard it my whole life. Every time Clyde had done something for his kid the whole town talked about it, and all ma could harp on was how that was supposed to be my life.

She couldn’t afford to give me the finer things in life, but she’d done the best she could. Still she could never let go of the past and the fact that my dad had helped bring the MC to what it was today. He’d been the brains and Clyde the brawn. Ma always believed that it was because of my dad that the legitimate businesses the club started up were doing as well as they were.

Me, I didn’t give a fuck. Life is what it is and living on what ifs never sat well with me. “I want her out of here.” I sighed long and hard. She’s the only person in my life that could get me to bend over backwards to please her, but I couldn’t give her this.

“I can’t do that ma.” Fuck, her eyes were about to pop out of her head.

“Well I won’t be coming around if she’s going to be here.”

“Ma, come on. Look at her. You read that letter. Are you going to stand there and tell me you’d be proud of me if I sent her out there alone?”

Ma was the head of the women’s shelter in town, the one I’d started with her help. I knew no matter how mad she was there was no way she could put a woman in danger. I had no doubt that she’d get over her hate for the father to see her way to helping the daughter. Though that shit might take forever.

“How do you know this isn’t some kind of setup? This family cannot be trusted. Dead or not, I wouldn’t trust Clyde Drexel no farther than I could piss.” Real classy ma. Meanwhile, I’d relaxed my hold on the other one and she’d apparently had enough.

“You don’t know anything about my dad. You’re probably one of those tramps he kicked out of his bed in his younger days and now you’re just sour.”

“What in the fuck?”

“Gavin!” Ma’s shout stopped me just as I was about to do something I’d regret. I never in my life ever raised a hand to a woman but swear to fuck I was about to throw this one against the wall.

“You get one warning in this life, you’ve used yours up. You say one more thing to her and I won’t only throw you out, I’ll deliver you to Sanchez myself.” She had tears in her eyes but I couldn’t let that sway me. No one and I mean no one talks to ma that way. Not even her asshole husband.

“Ma, are we good here? I’m gonna need you if I’m gonna do this. I don’t know what the deal is other than what was said in that letter. What I do know is that this one needs us now and we don’t turn our backs on people. Remember how you felt when her dad turned you away? This is not the way. She had nothing to do with what went on back then.”

I kept my eyes on the brat’s as I spoke because I needed her to know just what the fuck we were dealing with here. “Ma?”

“I hear you, I’m thinking.” Fucking pain in the ass. She has the tongue of a scorpion and the heart of a lamb. She’ll come around.

“Unhand that-it-her, whatever. And come sit down, I gotta think. I could use a drink.” She was still giving the kid the death glare but I was no longer worried they’d come to blows. Then again with ma you never know.

“You know where your Baileys is ma.” Like I was gonna leave her alone with this kid. I don’t trust her ass no how.

“You, you want something to drink? You look like you could use a good belt.” She said belt like she meant something other than a stiff drink. “Ma, go.” She left the room for the dining room and the bar.
