I glanced at my watch. At this time last week, I’d be sitting on the beach, looking out over crystal clear blue water, while the breeze blew my hair around and I could smell the saltwater in the air.

I missed it and I missed my grandmother.

But today was the first day of the rest of my life.

At least that’s what my parents kept saying.

All of those years of studying and missing out on the things my peers were doing had finally paid off. Today I was going to start my job with one of the most prestigious law firms in Chicago.

I’d landed the job before graduation, but had insisted I start three months later. I never took any breaks during all of my years of schooling. I deserved a break and had booked a three month vacation in Greece. My parents had been livid, but I wanted to visit my grandmother and rest after all of the hard work I’d put in.

I smiled to myself, remembering the handsome older man I’d spent two weeks with while in Greece. A couple days we never left his bungalow by the water.

It was the perfect summer fling. I met Henry at a farmer’s market. We started flirting and hit it off. He was old enough to be my father and had been in Greece for a vacation himself. We didn’t share any intimate details those two weeks; we just enjoyed each other with no strings attached. I didn’t even know his last name.

I hadn’t seen him now for about six weeks, but I hadn’t forgotten him. Henry’s face was the one I saw when I got out my vibrator at night. I couldn’t get him off of my mind and doubted I’d ever be with another lover who made me feel like he did.

Henry didn’t give two shits about my curves or size. He alway insisted they turned him on. I would roll my eyes, but the way he fucked me gave me no doubts he desired me.

I was not even close to being a virgin when I met him, but I’d never been with a man like him. I wasn’t sure if it was the age or what, but he would be a hard act to follow.

That was okay. There would be little or no time to date for the unforeseeable future anyway. I had no doubt I’d be working sixty hour weeks and I had big plans to move my way up the law firm as quickly as I could. I didn’t need a man at this time in my life, nor did I want one.

That’s why the fling was Henry had been perfect and just what I needed at this point of my life.

I glanced at my watch again. I was sitting outside the office of my new boss. I’d started a couple of days ago, but the hours had been filed with orientation videos, getting my computer set up, and learning the ropes of the law firm.

Today I would be diving into work and getting cases assigned to me. The first order of business was meeting with the boss, Russell Schmidt. He liked to meet with all new associates when they started to get a feel for their goals and what they wanted to get out working for this law firm.

I wiped my sweaty palms on my skirt. I had no idea why I was so nervous. I deserved to be here and I’d met Russell Schmidt when I’d interviewed. He had taken over this law firm from his father who had built it from the ground up. Russell had been personable but I’d also seen him in the court room. You didn’t want to get on his bad side.

“You can go in now,” the secretary said, breaking the silence. She didn’t even look up from the keyboard, basically ignoring me, but when you were the assistant to Russell Schmidt, you probably had to be really good at multitasking.

I entered Russell’s office and he was reading something on his phone. When I clicked the door shut, he put it on the desk and gave me his full attention. He stood up and reached across the desk to shake my hand.

“Alexandra Diakos,” he smiled and gripped my hand tight in his. “It’s so good to see you again. Please, sit down.” He motioned for the chairs in front of his desk and I smoothed my skirt before sitting down. Russell sat down as well, leaning back in his chair.
