I snort, shaking my head once again, this time at how well he knows me. It never ceases to amaze me the teeniest minute details he not only notices but remembers and never seems to forget.

Me: Definitely didn’t take that tour. Was probably trying to look for an article or something and thought ‘I ain’t got time for that shit’ before clicking the X.

Husband: LOL. The difference between a tech geek who reads every pop-up and a kept woman with an insatiable hunger for kinky knowledge.

That actually makes me “laugh out loud,” and I type out my response.

Me: Kept woman, my ass. Never forget, good sir, I was your very first investor. *winky face emoji

Husband: haha I won’t, baby. I promise I will never forget you are the one who made this life possible. You are the one who’s made every single one of my dreams come true, even one I’m sure everyone else in the universe would put more in the “nightmare” category instead.

His message is heart-achingly sweet, darkly funny, and accurate, all at the same time, so all I can do is respond with a mix of emojis, from teary eyes, to laughing faces, to a skull, and finally a black heart. After a moment, I send him another.

Me: 1 hour and 23 minutes.

His response is swift.

Husband: It’s just dinner, baby. Just so you can meet him outside the club, face-to-face, and you can ask him any questions you have and answer anything he might want clarification on from the sub herself instead of from her Dom.

Me: You could’ve at least let me cook the damn dinner. You’re going to give me a complex and make me think you don’t like my cooking anymore.

Husband: I didn’t want you to worry about *anything* today. Dinner will be delivered right as we arrive. If it makes you feel better, you can dump it all into your pretty serving ware. But until then, you just relax.

Me: Fine.

Husband: And Savannah?

Me: Yeah?

Husband: You look fucking beautiful today.

I smile at that, my face warming. While he’s always called me beautiful, even when I’ve been on my death bed sick with a stomach virus that turned my complexion green, the fact that I put effort into my hygiene and appearance makes his compliment hit different. When I’d normally shoo it away with a roll of my eyes while thinking yeah, right, this time, I don’t send it flying in some other direction. I let it hit its mark—my heart.

Me: Thank you, husband.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

ROMAN

Me: Dinner in twenty.

Dom: I’ll be there.

Me: Can’t thank you enough, man.

Dom: Don’t mention it.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

ROMAN

Me: Dinner in ten.

Dom: LOL you nervous?

Me: Nah, just excited. For all of us.

Dom: Yeah, it’ll definitely be a special night. See y’all soon.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

SAVANNAH

The doorbell rings for the second time, and since I’m currently rearranging the gyoza dumplings into my crisp-white serving dish, Roman moves around the kitchen island, where he was watching me nervously work, to go let in our guest.

I hear the two sets of footsteps make their way toward me, and I seem to lose the ability to function. I attempt to swallow the lump in my throat, but it makes a dry clicking sound, no liquid to help do its job while my eyes refuse to leave the task I've been doing and redoing for... I let out a sigh. I don't even know how long I've been standing here.

I can’t seem to lift my eyes at all, actually.

We’re meeting just as acquaintances tonight, no dynamic in play so we can see if we truly vibe with the man himself, so I’m allowed to meet his eyes and speak freely all I want. But it’s as if I’m unconsciously trying to hide within myself.

Fight, flight, or freeze. Everything within and about me has chosen the last option.

Thankfully, I’m not forced to come off as rude, because as soon as Roman’s presence is beside me once again, my body thaws and I’m not longer frozen with anxiety. And just as he says, “I’d like to introduce my wife, Savannah. Baby, this is Thomas,” I lift my eyes to find a handsome man I don’t recognize from the club. All three of my guesses were wrong.

But he said it was someone I enjoyed watching scene. I don’t know who this man is.

I force myself forward with my hand outstretched. “Nice to meet you, Thomas,” I say, trying to keep my voice steady. I don’t know what I’m feeling at the moment. Not really disappointment. Surprised, because I truly thought I nailed down the only three Doms Roman would’ve selected from. So I had imagined every scenario while alternating only those three men. Which means my system is currently overloaded with emotions battling to win the most attention.

I had scoured those three profiles, dissecting every answer, every choice, every entry, letting each one mold a picture in my imagination of what acting out my fantasy with them would look like.
