“Okay, then,” I said, drawing him close for a kiss—the claiming kind.

“Thank God,” he rasped when I let him breathe. “I had all kinds of things runnin’ through my head on the way over here from my house.”

“And what did you need to get before you came to see me?”

“For one, I wasn’t about to show up smelling like cows to try and get you to go home with me.”

I laughed. “I would have followed you home no matter what you smelled like.”

“I dunno,” he said, grinning lazily. “It was bad.”

“I appreciate your being thoughtful.”

He couldn’t seem to stop smiling, and then stood up quickly and dug into the right pocket of his soft, faded jeans and withdrew a key on a ring, which he passed to me. “I needed to make sure I had this before I came on up here so you’d know I was serious about you bein’ with me.”

“I already knew you were serious.” I sighed, smiling at him as he sat down again, this time beside me on the wicker love seat. “But I appreciate the key and the ring.”

“That won’t be the last ring you get from me,” he rasped, his breath catching as he set his hat down on the coffee table and put his hand on my thigh.

“Oh?” I asked, barely able to speak, so overcome with Mac and his declarations.

“Not at all.”

“Then I suspect I’ll need to get you one as well.”

“You do that,” he said, and leaned in to kiss me again.

And I most certainly would.
