I rounded on him. “What is it?”

“Make sure not to gush like that when he’s in the room.” His remark was cutting, and if I didn’t know better, I’d have said he was jealous. “That is not how we treat celebrities.”

“Seriously? Aren’t we beyond that by now?” He was still referring to the first time I was starstruck. “I would never. But there’s nothing wrong with admiring someone from afar.”

“Whatever,” he said, nearly colliding with Kendall as she entered the room. It was so unlike him that I had to wonder what’d put a bug up his butt. “I’ll be right back.”

“What’s wrong with him?” Kendall asked. I did a double take at her striking eyelids, which were a deep plum.

“What isn’t wrong with him?” I groused. “Your makeup looks awesome. It’ll match the jacket Rowan chose for today.”

“That was the plan,” she replied, then glanced over her shoulder. “Did Rowan have a run-in with Brett at the fundraiser?”

I bit my lip. “You could say that.”

She winced. “The weekend was so busy, I’d nearly forgotten to ask. Was it ugly?”

“More like annoying, in my opinion. He showed up with a date—some gorgeous model type.” I was sweating under the collar from simply recounting the evening.

“Of course he did. Wanted to rub it in, I bet.”

I rolled my eyes. “Naturally.”

“Such a child. If it wasn’t so long since we’ve talked, I’d give him a piece of my mind.” Her eyes grew distant. “Too bad Rowan didn’t have a date—well, outside of you.”

“I wa…wasn’t his date,” I stammered. “You know I was only invited because he wanted me—”

“Relax.” She squeezed my arm. “I was only teasing.”

My pulse throbbed while she asked more questions, mostly benign, thankfully, about the guest list and the food. When I told her about the speech, her eyes softened. “I hope Rowan takes Lorenzo up on the offer.”

I wanted to push for more, but it wasn’t my place. I should’ve been glad I’d gotten any details at all from Rowan that night. Though today it felt like the magic had worn off or like it hadn’t happened at all.

When Rowan came in to assist Kendall for the first show, she changed the subject. Once she was all set, Rowan focused on the guest. Trying to prove a point, I pretended to intently study something on the planner while the handsome Dawson Henry was ushered in. As I absently handed Rowan a shoehorn, I listened to their small talk so I could dish about it with Anita later.

Both shows went off without a hitch, and at the end of the day, we were already planning for the rest of the week.

“Have you seen that pair of black Louboutins?” Rowan asked, looking frustrated.

“Is that a real question? There are a million pairs of black shoes.”

“By now, I thought you’d have the shoe closet organized.” He motioned toward the small room off the main closet that looked ransacked. “Even you could figure out how to make black shoes orderly.”

Ooh, a compliment. I’d try not to preen.

I handed him a couple of empty hangers left over from today’s outfit changes. He tried to keep them separate from the network’s stash because he was possessive that way. Okay, that line of thought needed to come to an end. Stop thinking of other ways he could be possessive.

“You do realize that after this job is long gone, I will hate anything fashion related.”

“And here I was hoping you were beginning to love it,” he replied with a pout.

“Not a chance. But maybe appreciate it?”

“Well, that’s progress.”

“I suppose,” I mused. “It helps to spin it a different way.”

“I’m sure you’ve put an extra spin on me as well.”

I smirked. “Can you blame me, Mr. Perfectionist?”

“Not really.” He frowned. “I’ve heard I’m not easy to live with either.”

My chest constricted. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean… I’m sure your work life is different than your personal life.”

He laughed humorlessly. “Do you actually think people change personalities when they get home from work? Like taking off a coat or something?”

I grimaced. “Maybe? I wouldn’t really know. I’ve only officially dated one person, and that wasn’t for very long.”

He stopped wrestling with the hangers and stared at me. “And what happened with that relationship?”

I moved to the city and decided being single was the best for now. In fact, it was really fun not having to answer to anyone but yourself. And besides, I was making up for lost time after living in a conservative town in the middle of nowhere.

“Oh, is it sharing hour between us again?” This man was giving me whiplash.

“I’ve clearly shared too much already. Look what happened at the…” He waved his hand as if he couldn’t say the word fundraiser.

“All I know is that your ex is something else.”

“The one before him too,” he muttered, turning away.
