I’d expected Jay to stiffen, for his face to close down, his indifferent and cold posture to return. But it didn’t. He continued playing with the tie on my bikini, took a sip of wine and waited for me to say more.

I bit my lip. “We’re getting closer to wrap, so the days are longer,” I explained.

The waves crashed softly in the background, native birds sang in the distance. Otherwise there was no other sound. No comment from Jay.

“I’m assuming you don’t have business in New Zealand,” I continued.

Now his face changed. Gone was the lazy satisfaction that had softened every one of his features. They were sharper now, eyes filled with intensity, his hand settled on my hip, pressing the pads of his fingers into my bone.

“The only business I have here is you,” he murmured, voice low.

I swallowed, my stomach dipping at his words. The low, gravely tenor of his voice.

“And how long until you wrap up your business with me?” I asked shyly. I didn’t know where my trepidation came from. No, I did. This weekend had been a whirlwind. Had been everything I hadn’t let myself hope for. But it had not erased the months before. Had not filled in the holes left inside of me. Jay’s absence, my heartbreak, was close enough to taste, to chill my bones despite the hole in the ozone layer. Large parts of me were choked with fear of Jay leaving again. Of not having his hands on me, not having his scent mingled with every breath I took.

Jay reached up to brush my hair from my face, cupping my jaw with his large hand. “Stella, I’m never going to be done with you,” he said. “I won’t leave this place until you’re sitting beside me on the plane.”

I blinked at his words. “You’re going to stay here until I’m finished?” I clarified.

“Yes,” Jay replied, kissing my neck.

I tried my best to focus. “But we don’t wrap for another two and a half weeks,” I countered.

Jay’s deft fingers worked the tie at my neck so my top fell away. “I’m aware.” His lips moved down the swell of my breast. I sucked in sharply at the way he made my pussy clench when he did that.

“And you are a very important businessman who is always working,” I continued, voice breathy.

“Of that I am also aware.”

Lips on my nipple now, his teeth grazing it with erotic warning.

“Well, I seem to recall you making a song and dance out of coming to Missouri with me, on Thanksgiving. For three days. Because ‘you do not take vacations.’” I had been planning on doing a whole deep menacing voice when I quoted him, but it didn’t exactly work with Jay’s lips where they were.

His teeth bit down to the point of sublime pain before he looked up at me. “I remember that, pet,” he acknowledged. “But that was before. When I thought I could control you. Control us. Even then, I could not survive without you for those three days. I’ve existed without you for months. I shall not do it again. Wherever your work takes you, where mine takes me, we will be together. There won’t be another night where you fall asleep without me. Without feeling my cock inside of you.”

My stomach dipped delightfully at his words, my heart swelling so I was choking on it. Jay was not a man for empty placations. He was not hearts and flowers, saying anything he didn’t intend on making good on.

It was not a practical promise to make, with our jobs, with life stretching out ahead of us, years promising all sorts of situations which would likely require us to part, situations beyond our control.

But that was the thing with Jay. Nothing was beyond his control when it came to us. I believed that he was promising me a lifetime together. And, despite the trials that I knew would come with it, I wanted it.

So I whispered, “Okay”.

Then I lost myself in him again once more.

Chapter 5

“Is it safe to enter?” Wren called out with one hand over her eyes. The other was holding a bottle of wine.

I rolled my eyes from where I was sitting at the counter, watching Jay cook. I had been doing it ever since he started, and it was somewhat of a religious experience. Jay, my Jay, my fiancé in the kitchen. The same one I’d longed for him in. The same one, on a particularly bad night, I’d been curled up in a ball on the floor crying. Though to be fair, it was after almost two bottles of wine.

It was hard to tear my eyes from him for fear he might disappear, but I managed it.

Karson entered behind her, not covering his eyes which were focused on Wren in a way that communicated he was ready to jump in front of a bullet at any moment. Like she was his sun. Then they went to her ass because she had a great ass.
