Devyn pushed up on her toes and kissed my cheek. “You know I’m totally making them now.”

I smiled. “Good luck Monday in court, if I don’t see you before then. Let me know how it turns out.”

“I will. Goodnight, bestie.”

CHAPTER 12

Devyn

I woke up with my nerves shot on Sunday morning, so tense about tomorrow. This felt like the last normal day before all hell broke loose. When I got up, Heath was already working at the pizza shop, assembling boxes before they opened for the day, and Hannah was still sleeping.

Since it was still early out in L.A., I waited as long as I could before dialing Mia. Thankfully, she was an early riser, typically up and about by 5 AM. I filled her in on everything, including what had happened with Owen since the night we met when I arrived here.

“I can’t believe you’ve been holding out on me like this!” Mia shrieked.

“I know. I’m sorry. Things have been crazy. This conversation was long overdue.”

“You know the saying love at first sight?” she asked. “Well, I fell in love with Owen at first voice. From the moment he answered your phone at the bar, I knew he was good people.”

I sighed. “You should see what he looks like.”

“You’d better text me a photo after we get off the phone.”

“I actually don’t have a single photo with him, which is kind of sad. But if you Google Owen Dawson, realtor in Manhattan, I’m sure it will come up.”

“Doing it right now.” Sure enough, within a few seconds, she gasped. “Well, hot damn. He’s perfection, Dev. Look at those eyes. What’s wrong with you? Why aren’t you marrying this dude and having his babies? Are you insane?”

“I’m trying to spare him,” I told her. I truly felt that way.

“This better have nothing to do with Robert,” she scolded.

Just the mention of Robert’s name made my blood pressure spike. He had really gotten on my last nerve lately, the way he wouldn’t let up about me paying him a visit.

“It doesn’t have anything to do with Robert, although he’s a whole ’nother story for a different day.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

“For one, I’m probably leaving soon. I need to be careful who I get attached to out here.”

“Who says Owen can’t follow you out to L.A.?”

That was laughable. “Believe me, Owen is never leaving New York. He and his friends he owns the building with are so tight—thick as thieves. They’re like one big family. Or a gang.”

“You’d be surprised what someone would do for love.”

My cheeks burned. “He’s not in love with me.”

“Yet. From everything you’ve said, it sounds like he would head that direction eventually, if you don’t sabotage things first.”

Gazing out the window at the smoggy street, I smiled. “Well, he certainly has been the best thing about being in New York.”

She cleared her throat. “Speaking of New York…”

“What?” My heart lurched. Is she coming to visit?

“I kind of have some news,” Mia announced.

“Okay?”

“This is going to come out of left field, but…I’m moving there!”

I gasped. “You’re moving to New York? How did this happen?”

“The gallery is opening a new location, and they want me to manage it. Isn’t that crazy? It only became official yesterday. I was gonna call you today if you hadn’t called me. Can you believe it?”

My pulse raced with excitement. “This is amazing! When are you coming?”

“Sometime in the next couple of months, but I’m gonna have to make a trip sooner than that to find a place. God, I hope we don’t miss each other, if for some reason you’re gone by then. That would be awful.”

My mouth hung open. “Holy crap. This is the last thing I expected you to say.”

“I knew you’d be shocked. Heck, even I’m shocked that I’m leaving L.A. I’ve never lived anywhere else.”

“You’re gonna love it here, Mia. I just hope I’m still here so I can enjoy it with you before I have to go back.” A pang of sadness squeezed my chest.

“Well, I’m currently apartment hunting from afar. So if cough-cough you know of any handsome realtors who have spare apartments in their buildings, let me know.”

“I’ll ask Owen for sure. If there’s nothing opening up here, maybe he knows of some other places. I’m sure he has connections.”

“Add it to the list of favors he’s done for you?”

I cringed. “Great.”

She laughed. “How weird is it gonna be that our situations reverse? I’m gonna be there, and you’re gonna be back here. What universe is this?”

I didn’t know whether to be happy or sad. I would potentially get to see Mia soon, but I’d be losing my best friend once I got back to L.A. That felt like a sucker punch. With no family out there, it was a hard pill to swallow.

“Well, as much as it’s gonna suck not having you around every day, I’m so proud of you for this promotion. And I’ll definitely be coming back here to visit, especially if you’re in New York. Talking to you right now made me realize how much I’ve missed you. I have, like, no female friends out here.”
