I scowled at him when he kissed my head and told me I’d be rewarded if I took a good nap. I didn’t want to admit how tired I was, but I fell asleep soon after he left.

When I woke up, the sunlight was fading. I reached for my phone to find out how late it was and saw a message from Rogue. I’ll be in the woods behind Blade’s cabin at nine. If you can find me, I’m all yours, but only if you use your crutches.

Asshole. It was eight-thirty, which gave me plenty of time to change and head out that way. I wanted to chase him again, but even I knew that wasn’t realistic with my foot swollen and aching. I was going to track him down and use him hard, and we were both going to love every minute of it.

ROGUE

I held my breath when I heard Ghost coming on an ATV. At least I hoped it was him. I was armed in case, but I didn’t want to fight tonight unless I was fighting Ghost off so that he’d come for me harder. I’d been horny as hell since he’d been so turned on by me rescuing him.

He hadn’t yelled at me for riding right into the line of fire. He accepted that I wanted to protect him as much as he wanted to protect me, but I managed to do it in a way that let us both win.

I shivered when he cut his engine, and I made the slightest movement, peeking around the tree I was hiding behind long enough to confirm it was him. His blond hair was unmistakable. He looked like a ghost, but he was real and solid, and he was going to take me and give me exactly what I needed.

“Rogue! I know you’re out there. I’m one of the best trackers in the marines. That’s why they were so pissed off when I left. That’s why the FBI wanted me. It doesn’t matter how well you hide. I will find you, and I will make you mine.”

Part of me wanted to leap out from behind the tree and tell him to take me right there, but I wanted this to be a game, and I knew he wanted that too. I also knew that by the time he found me, we were both going to be ready to combust.

He moved away from me, his crutches thumping on the ground. I was shocked he’d actually brought them. I figured he’d ignore me, but maybe his foot was actually hurting really badly. If he cared about the pain, he could’ve said so. He wanted this, and I wasn’t going to feel bad for dragging him out to the woods. We could never be as loud and wild as we needed to be if we stayed in the house.

I wondered if he was actually following some suspected trail or if he was giving me a sense of comfort, hoping I would move and give myself away. If he took too long, I just might. I needed him desperately. I was absolutely sure now that he was my destiny. I had been from the moment our eyes had locked across that pasture. Ghost was mine. My future. My home. He belonged at the ranch with me. I was going to teach him to ride, and I was going to do whatever it took to make him happy. If Grant even thought about balking at hiring Ghost as added protection, I was going to make sure he regretted it.

I’d walked around in circles before choosing a hiding place. I’d even made sure to leave footprints leading the wrong way, but I doubted that would throw Ghost off. I didn’t really know what method he used to track people down. In my mind, he was pure magic. Even if I left no clues, he would find me because he needed me as much as I needed him.

I was also sure that under normal circumstances, he would move silently, but tonight, he could also be assured I wouldn’t try too hard to get away. I wasn’t going to run, and neither was he. I believed that now.

I heard him starting to come closer, circling around behind me. Had he known where I was all along? Did I dare move? As much as I wanted him to find me, my heart began to race as he got closer. I felt like prey cowering in the dark woods. What would he do to me once he had me?

He’ll force you to surrender completely.

That was more terrifying than facing a mountain lion or a bear.

He was close, not much more than a yard away. I tried to shrink myself, hoping he couldn’t see me around the thick trunk of the tree.
