“Anna, stop!” I hear him shout as I speed past. As I pick up speed, I glance in the rearview mirror and see him hop one of the black BMWs. He’s coming after me.

I can barely even drive my vision is so blurry from all the tears spilling from my eyes. But I keep my foot on the gas. I have to get out of here. I have to get away from him. How can I be anywhere near the man who killed my father?

He changed my life forever. He’s the reason I spent all those years in foster care, bouncing back and forth between different homes with parents who never truly loved me. And then fate drives us together again and I end up falling head over heels for him? What a cruel world.

There’s a flash in my mirror, and I look back to see Blake in his BMW coming up hot on my tail. He really knows how to drive and is waving an arm, clearly indicating for me to slow down.

But I can’t. I hate him now.

I hate him and love him at the same time.

I’m in love with the man who killed my father, and I have no idea how to process that, so the only thing I know how to do right now is run away.

I look back at the road, and my heart nearly leaps out of my chest as I see a turn coming up. I yank the wheel hard to the right, causing the tires to squeal and the suspension to lean hard over.

“Oh, shit!” I scream as the car goes up on two tires.

I pull the wheel hard the other way, but just end up overcorrecting when I come down. The whole car bounces hard and nosedives straight into the ditch on the side of the road.

I scream.

There’s a sound like an explosion, and I faceplant into an airbag which bursts out into my face as I’m snapped forward as the car comes to an abrupt stop.

Anna

“Ow…” I mutter as I reach back and put a hand on my neck.

I’m alive. Thank God for that, I guess, but there’s a pain in my neck from what I assume is probably whiplash from the crash I just survived from driving like a maniac. My back is a bit sore too but nothing too terrible.

I grab the door handle and push, but the door doesn’t open. It’s stuck. In fact, it’s more than that. It’s bent all to hell from the impact of the crash. I push the airbag out of my way, unbuckle my seatbelt, and start to climb over the console to get to the passenger side door, but that’s when I hear Blake’s voice behind me.

“Anna!” I turn around and see him looking at me through the window, which somehow is still intact. “Anna, are you all right?”

Part of me is happy to see him. Another part of me is still fuming and wants to tell him to go fuck himself. I’m also still crying.

“I think so,” I reply.

“Hang on,” he says. “I’m gonna get you out of there!”

I scooch back a little in my seat as Blake grabs ahold of the door handle from the outside. He also braces himself against the rear door with his foot and takes a deep breath.

Then, with all the strength he seems to have in his body, he pulls.

At first, nothing seems to happen, but then there’s a sound like metal being stretched. I can’t hear him groaning from inside the car, but I can see his face, twisted with strain, his cheeks growing redder and redder by the second.

Metallic groans and pops sound from the hinge and the latch of the door. Then suddenly, the entire door snaps off its frame. Blake topples over backwards and kicks a leg up to keep the door from crashing down on top of him. It falls to the side and lands in the brush, and I hear him let out a deep exhale.

“Shit,” he mutters as he brushes himself off and gets to his feet. And then he’s extending a hand to me. “Come on,” he says with nothing but kindness in his eyes. “Let’s get you back to the house.”

After all that. After everything. I run away from him at the house, steal one of his cars and speed off, crash it into a ditch, and he has to come and save me, and he’s still ready to just take me back to the house to take care of me.

I’m still dazed, but I reach out and take his hand. That’s when I see it—the beautiful engagement ring on my finger.

How could all of this have happened so quickly?

More tears begin flooding down my face. There’s no question about it; I do love this man. And that’s what’s making what he just told me so hard to take in.
