We live in New York, and there’s a heatwave coming through. When most think of New York, they think of the frigid as hell winters, but if you live here, you know firsthand that the summers are a bitch. The humidity can shed ten pounds off you just by walking outside.

“You know what we should do?” Declan says, turning his phone around and showing us his screen—a picture of a bunch of kids from our school at the beach.

“I’m in,” Gage says.

“You don’t even like any of those assholes,” I say with a laugh. Gage is literally the least social person I know—unless it’s with someone in our very small circle.

“I don’t need to like them to get in the water and cool down.” Gage stands. “It’s too hot to even smoke. Fuck it, let’s go.”

Declan chuckles, and I glance at him, raising a brow in question. “He saw Tori in the picture. He’s been eyeing that cheerleader for months.”

“Tori?” I say with a laugh. “Actually, I can totally see it. She’s all cheerleader meets emo with her short skirts, black lipstick, and fishnet stockings. She’s like the least peppy cheerleader on the squad. It’s the perfect match made in hell.”

Declan nods, and Gage punches me in the arm. “Fuck you, asshole. Let’s go.”

A couple of hours later, we’re walking onto the beach wearing our board shorts with towels tucked under our arms. I immediately spot Layla, one of our good friends, lying out with her two best friends, Tori and Kaylee, and they’re surrounded by a bunch of jocks. When Layla glances up, her lips pursed together in obvious annoyance, she nudges Kaylee, who then looks our way, her gray eyes meeting mine.

This gets Tori’s attention, whose gaze seems to go straight to Gage. Something is said among the girls, and then a second later, the three of them saunter our way. I assume they’re coming over to say hi, so I’m confused as shit when they head directly toward each of us individually.

“Quick, pretend you’re in love with me and kiss me,” Kaylee murmurs. Before I have a chance to ask what the hell she’s talking about, her arms wrap around my neck and her mouth encloses over mine. Her lips are soft and supple, and when her tongue slips into my mouth, she tastes like the sweetest goddamn strawberries I’ve ever tasted.

Without thinking, I deepen the kiss, reaching down and lifting her off the ground. Her legs go around my torso, and her fingers drag through my hair, gently tugging on the ends. Our tongues collide with each other, stroking, caressing. I’ve kissed countless girls. It’s one of the perks of being in a band in high school. Girls flock to you. They want a taste of the bad boy. I don’t know what it is about the sight of a guy with a guitar in his hands, but they want it—want me. But never have I felt like this when kissing a girl. My heart thumps against my rib cage, my body’s on fire, and my dick is as hard as a rock.

And then she ends the kiss. Her hypnotic gray eyes meet mine, and I force myself to suck in a harsh breath, having to remind myself how to breathe.

“Thank you,” she says with a soft smile on her face and a hint of blush on her cheeks. “The football players were begging us to go out with them tonight, and Layla said we already had plans. They were asking who with, and then you guys walked up, and...” She shrugs, dragging her teeth across her bottom lip until it pops out, making me want to capture it with my own mouth. “I owe you one.”

We stay like this for a couple of beats—Kaylee in my arms, her thighs pressed into my sides—and then I do something that shocks the hell out of us both. My mouth ascends, and my lips capture hers again. When her tongue finds its way back into my mouth, I suck on it, tasting her sweetness, getting lost in everything Kaylee Thomas. I grind her center against my dick, and she moans into my mouth. I have no clue what’s happening, but I never want it to stop. I was just giving Gage shit about having eyes for a cheerleader, and now here I am, standing in the middle of the beach, making out with the head fucking cheerleader.

“Wow,” Kaylee breathes when the kiss ends. “That was incredible. I don’t think anyone will be asking me out now.” It takes me a second, but then I remember that’s why we were kissing in the first place.

“Go out with me,” I blurt out, aware of the irony in my request. She throws her head back in a laugh, thinking I’m fucking with her. “I’m serious. Go out with me.”
