“No. You just leave your president to fend for himself after I told you he’d been shot.” She tilted her head, obviously goading Falcon. “You gunnin’ for his position?”

“Stop it, Lemon. You’re taking up valuable time we might not have. Get your ass in the fucking cage.” As amusing as it was to watch Lemon run circles around Falcon, now wasn’t the time. Also, if anyone was going to spar with Lemon, it would be me.

“You and I are going to have to come to an understanding, Rocket.” She was back to poking me in the chest. “You’ve got some serious issues in your club. I’m guessing every single fuckin’ one of them have to do with either secrets or trust. I’m going to help you with this one, but your men are gonna have to understand that I will never defer to them simply because they’re members of this club.”

“You’re puttin’ yourself in a pretty high position there, princess.” Falcon just couldn’t resist. He thought he was going to get the last word with Lemon, but I had news for the man. His best bet would be to bite his tongue and let her say whatever she wanted. She would anyway, and he’d be left feeling like he’d been skinned alive.

She snorted. “Why wouldn’t I? If I’m going to be Rocket’s old lady, I’m definitely going to have my say and I will be respected above anyone else. Even Rocket. Why? Because I’m a Goddamned lady. It’s right there in the fucking name. So yeah. Maybe I am a princess. Get fuckin’ used to it.”

Yeah. That shut Falcon up. Shut me up, too.

“Now. Getting back to the conversation before. If I’m making the move from Iron Tzars to Grim Road, it’s not going to be a step down. We will get this club in order and working like a fuckin’ team so incidents like today won’t happen again. There’s gonna have to be some fuckin’ changes if I’m staying, Rocket. Non-negotiable. Clear?” When I didn’t say anything, Lemon nodded crisply. “Good.”

She tossed her head, her long ponytail brushing the string wrapped around her back where her bikini top fastened, and sashayed her sweet ass outside. Which was when I fully appreciated what the woman was wearing. Which was to say, not fucking much. That was when I fully noticed the blood she had all over her, that she didn’t acknowledge at all. She didn’t try to wipe her face or her hands. It was like this was her way of owning the shit. She’d killed and she didn’t give a rat’s ass who knew it.

As I watched while Bear helped her into the truck, I had to adjust myself. The blood in my body must have truly all headed south because there was no way this was my life right now.

“What. The. Fuck. Just. Happened?”

“Old lady?” Falcon looked and sounded like he thought he might have heard wrong and like he might follow Lemon outside and throttle her. Because he absolutely wouldn’t be aiming that look at me.

I started to deny it, to tell Falcon Lemon was fucking with him, then stopped and tilted my head. “You got a problem with that?”

“Oh, come on, Rocket!” I thought maybe Lemon had broken Falcon. Pretty sure the other man was getting ready to snap. “You can’t take that hellion as your woman. What is she? Fourteen?”

“She’s eighteen, and I’ll do what the fuck I want. It’s my life. I’ll take whatever woman I want to be my old lady and you won’t make a single fuckin’ comment.”

“The men ain’t gonna like this.”

“What? That Lemon’s mine? Or that she’ll put them in their place if she thinks they need it?”

“Have you even fucked her yet?”

Couldn’t let that one go. I swung a haymaker at Falcon, catching him in the chin. He didn’t go down, but he staggered back a couple of steps. “That’s the only warning you get, Falcon. Talk about Lemon that way again, I’ll kill you.”

“Jesus Christ, Rocket! You better know what the fuck you’re doin’.”

“I can honestly say I’ve never been more sure in my fuckin’ life.”

I followed Lemon to the cage and climbed in beside her. Knox, our road captain, started the truck and sped off. She sat silently, still a bloody mess. I was sure she was uncomfortable as the blood dried on her skin, but she didn’t complain or wipe at her skin, or acknowledge the situation in any way. Instead, she kept her gaze fixed out the window.

I placed my hand gently over hers. She turned her arm and laced her fingers with mine. There was a slight tremor running through her I almost missed. Had I not been holding her hand I doubt I’d have noticed. Could be she was chilled in the air conditioning, but I didn’t think so.
