When his eyes flew to the slider, my heart dropped again. He must have noticed since we both sprinted toward it, but I got there first.

Putting my hands out in front of me, I exclaimed, “What the fuck is your problem? You’re acting like you’re jealous.”

“If you think that’s going to work on me, then you don’t know me at all.”

“You’re right. I don’t.”

“Move, or I’ll do it for you.”

“I’m not—”

He leaned forward, tossing me over his shoulder with my ass now in his face.

“Jace, quit it!”

He didn’t listen, flinging me on the bed. Once he roughly opened the curtains and then slid the doors open, I jumped to my feet. Not knowing what to expect.

“Jace, leave—” I hesitated, realizing Deacon was nowhere to be found. We were up five stories, but that didn’t stop me from looking over the railing.

Where did he go?

“Happy now? I told you nobody was here.”

I could tell by his pissed-off composure he didn’t believe me for a second. It all happened so fast. One minute, we’re arguing like cats and dogs, and the next, our eyes both locked on the wallet Deacon left behind under the table. I lunged for it at the same time he did, but I was closer and grabbed it first. Impulsively not thinking, I put the wallet inside my panties. Right on my pussy.

“You think that will stop me?”

I opened my mouth to respond, but in one fluid motion, Jace gripped my wrists and turned me around, pressing my face and the front of my body against the screen door while he held my arms above my head.

I loudly gasped as my chest rapidly rose and fell.

With his other grip on my hip, he pinned me against the slider. I was held hostage in his tight hold.

From behind me, he rasped in my ear, “You have no idea who you’re fucking with, bunny.”

I didn’t know what to say.

I was barely breathing.

His grip on my hip slowly shifted toward my inner thigh as he slid his fingers up my leg, taking the bottom of his hoodie with him.

“What are you doing?”

“Digging for gold.”

His callused fingers slid up my stomach before he glided them into my panties, touching the top of my mound. My thighs immediately clenched, feeling my core getting wet. I swallowed hard, melting into his touch. Deacon’s hands didn’t compare to Jace’s. He didn’t come close to the way Jace was making me hot all over.

It wasn’t until he bit out in a husky tone, “And my little bunny has a completely shaved pussy,” that I slightly gasped, surprised by his outburst but also turned on as hell.

“Who would’ve thought,” he added in the same throaty voice.

Does that mean he thinks about me too?

Within seconds, his fingers skimmed my outer lips, and it was over before it even began. He growled as he yanked Deacon’s wallet out from my panties, backing away from me.

I felt the loss of his touch instantly.

The moment I turned around to look at him, he was already walking into his room. Never once…

Looking back at me or what he just intentionally put me through.

Nine

Cove

The past five and a half weeks were a whirlwind, beginning with graduation two weeks ago. The day replayed in my mind often without me even realizing it.

“Welcome graduates, colleagues, family, and friends. Congratulations to everyone moving forward with their lives today,” the principal of our school announced through his microphone, standing front and center on the stage before all of us. “I’d like to begin by thanking all of the families and friends in the audience this morning. I know how proud you must be of your sons or daughters stepping into the next chapter of their lives. I, myself, have a son who will be graduating next year, and words can’t describe the sense of pride I feel for him.”

I couldn’t believe the day was finally here. I was no longer in high school, and the future was mine for the taking. I applied to several colleges and got accepted into every last one.

I was foolish to think my parents would be in the audience, proud as fuck for their only child graduating. I’d think, as a parent, it’d be as much of a milestone as it was for their children. I even reminded my mom a few days ago, silently praying they’d pull through for me just this once, but I was hit with the harsh reality they didn’t give a shit. They weren’t sitting in the stands screaming my name in sheer joy and excitement.

I felt like I was truly abandoned by their selfishness. A monumental moment that was supposed to be about me turned into a day they completely ruined.

Upon receiving my diploma, I tried to stay in the moment, but I couldn’t. After I shook everyone’s hands on stage, I gazed at the audience, looking for my parents again, thinking maybe I couldn’t find them from where I was sitting. Only to be slapped in the face with no one.
