I guess I should smooth this over for now. This idiot plays his part at times. Perhaps he can continue to keep the guard dog’s eyes off me and the real situation at hand.

I lift my hand. “All right, all right. She’s back. You want her to suffer. You figure out how you think that should happen and I’ll foot the bill.

“As long as Anthony Knight stays out of our business, I don’t give a shit. The moment that big motherfucker turns his focus on us, I’m cutting you off and you don’t get a dime of what was promised. Consider it the fuckup clause to this arrangement.

“Yeah, whatever,” he mutters and storms out.

“You keep an eye on him and don’t stop fucking your little girlfriend yet. We might need her when he fucks this up.”

“Good to hear you talking in plurals. I thought you forgot yourself there for a moment. Don’t forget you need me.”

I don’t need anyone, but I’ll allow him to think he’s important. Dumbass kid. He doesn’t even understand the power he’s after or the consequences. Ah, who am I to warn him?

He narrows his eyes at me. “You really think her return means nothing?”

“It means nothing to me. I’m watching the players who concern me. Anyone else is a nonfactor. She has played her part for me. I know when to cut my losses and move on.”

“Um.”

I’m over this little conversation. As a matter of fact, I have some place I need to be. Someone has to come up with the money for all of this to work.

“Hey, one more thing,” I say and stand, fixing my suit jacket.

“What’s that?”

“Don’t come here anymore and make sure that one doesn’t either.”

As a matter of fact, I think it’s time I move on and find a new place. These kids are too stupid. They’re going to get caught and if I stick around, I’ll go down with them.

That’s not going to happen. I stumbled upon the opportunity to right what those fucks stole from me and my family. I’m going to prove Vander’s elite, no matter who, have never been untouchable.

My patience will pay off.

Chapter 47

How Rude

Alexis

I smile as AJ rushes to get his sneakers to put on so he can follow his daddy. He thinks he’s going out with us. Pit, Skittles, Scarlet and Leo are all here, so we can hit the range and go out for dinner.

The others are going to meet us there. Ant has really made an event of this. I think I heard Pit mention axe throwing.

“AJ, you don’t need your shoes, buddy,” Ant says gently. “You’re staying with Auntie Kid.”

I have to give my husband credit. I know he hasn’t forgiven Kid, but he’s willing to allow her to babysit for us. She’s not our only option, but I prefer it be her.

“Noo.” AJ pouts and kicks his feet as he sits on the floor, trying to put his shoes on the wrong feet.

Ant goes to squat in front of him. “Listen, Mommy and Daddy are going out with friends. You’re going to stay home this time. When we come back, I’ll read you a story and we’ll play with your cars. Okay?”

“AJ go too,” he whines.

“AJ,” I say in warning.

He stiffens and peeks back at me. I give him a look and he throws his shoe down and folds his little arms across his chest. Ant messes his hair and kisses his forehead.

“What did I tell you about those tantrums? Pick your shoes up and put them away. Then give Mommy a kiss goodbye,” he says to our son.

Still pouting, AJ gets the shoe he threw and puts them both back in the shoe cubby. With a long face, he comes and wraps around my leg, looking up at me like he can get me to change his father’s mind so he can come too.

“Be good for Auntie Kid, baby, and we’ll go to the park tomorrow.”

This lights his face up. He’s been enjoying our trips to the park. Ant runs around the playground with him like he’s a little kid. I love watching them.

“Yo, we need to head out,” Pit calls as he starts for the door.

Ant looks down at his watch. I take a moment to look him over. He looks good in the gray button-up and light acid-wash jeans. The gray sneakers speak to his swag and style.

My husband can make anything look sexy. He looks up at me and catches me biting my lip as I watch him. The smile that comes to his face makes him even more gorgeous, his eyes lighting up with it.

“We do need to go. Our reservation is in thirty. It’ll take twenty to get there,” he says.

“I’m ready.”

“I need to go to the bathroom one more time,” Ven says and rushes into the powder room.
