“I was nineteen and scared out of my mind. Someone was threatening the man I love more than anything. Your mom was dying. I didn’t want to place this burden on anyone else.

“Now you have me,” Pit seethes. “You’re my little brother’s wife. I dare someone to tell you you can’t step foot in Vander. You and AJ are coming home with us.

“This is a problem I’ll handle. I told you once before, I’ve got you. Now that I know who you are to my brother, you’re stuck with me.”

“But you’re in those photos.”

“And… there ain’t shit on me that anyone can make stick. A few phone calls, baby girl, that’s all this is going to take.”

“Which is why you should have come to me,” I snarl. “You’re a Knight. Nothing was ever going to happen to you or my family. I’ll be down in the car. Pack my son’s shit. If you want to come back to Vander”—I shake my head—“do whatever the fuck you want.”

Chapter 29

Junior

Ox

I have to go to the bathroom, and I need a break from sitting across from this woman. I’m annoyed. I had hoped she’d stay behind.

I wanted to go home and forget all about her. Now, the more I think about it, the angrier I get. Someone in Vander has been threatening my wife. While I don’t give a shit about her, it’s the principle.

I want to know who has the balls. My first thought is to get back and turn the city inside out. However, after Pit called Uncle Blake, he warned me not to go storming into Vander with my son and wife. He wants me to take them somewhere else and give him time to dig into this.

So we’re headed to the cabin once we land. I feel bad that we’re ruining the weekend Skittles had planned for Pit. I’m not sure I want the other guys to know about all of this.

“Anthony, sit down,” Alexis says as I stand and move into the aisle to stretch.

“Excuse me?” I turn to snarl at her.

That’s when I see AJ has gotten up to follow me. I purse my lips. I’m not used to hearing my son being called by my name.

“His name is Anthony Blake Knight Jr.,” Alexis says into her lap. “I wasn’t talking to you.”

I reach to place my hand on the top of AJ’s head. “I’m just going to the bathroom. I’ll be right back, little buddy.”

He starts to whimper and tries to follow anyway. I feel bad and get ready to pick him up to take him with me. However, Alexis scoops him up and places him in her lap.

“I’ve got him.”

I frown. “Thanks,” I mutter.

My thoughts are a mangled mess. I walk off for the bathroom. Anthony Jr. My son is named after me. I try not to think about all the things Alexis has done that say she hasn’t forgotten about me.

Her thoughts couldn’t be that much with me. Seven months, I haven’t seen AJ in seven months. I have to keep reminding myself of this fact.

“Fuck that, stop lying to yourself. She never once thought about you.” I shake my head as I look at my reflection in the bathroom mirror.

There is nothing that can redeem her. I won’t give myself any reasons to forgive her. Once this shit back home is settled, we’re going through with that divorce and I’m getting custody of my son.

I nod at my thoughts and move to relieve myself. I’m still muttering as I wash my hands and step out. Pit is waiting for me on the other side of the door. I should have known.

He nods for me to follow him. We move to the back cabin. He closes the door behind us.

“I’m not here because she’s my wife’s cousin. I’m here because you’re my brother and I know you. Just like the years you and I spent apart weren’t enough to ruin our friendship. The years away from her haven’t killed your feelings.

“I think you might be angry and with good fucking reason, but I see how you look at her and your son. All I see is love.”

I snort. “When I look at my son, yeah.”

“And when you look at her. You can lie to yourself, but I have eyes of my own.”

“What’s your point?”

“There are very few people I give a fuck about enough to get involved in their shit. You know this about me. You became one of those people a long time ago.

“Once you started putting your life at risk to cover my wife, you moved up that list, then I learned you’re my brother, so you’re at the top now.”

“I’m not sure I want to be involved in this shit, bro.”

Pit pins me with a glare. “But you and I both know we’re not built like that. Neither one of us can walk away and not handle this shit. Until she’s safe, Vander has a big fucking problem.”
