But when my time came—and I knew it would come soon—I would be there.

And fuck my best friend when that time came because West was it for me. I would put her before anyone fucking else.

West

I looked up at Jessie as he stepped up onto the porch. I’d come to Jessie’s before Lincoln headed into work this morning. I’d woken up this morning just feeling like I needed to be here. And being surrounded by everything that was Jessie helped whatever was going on inside my head.

He gave me a small smile as he handed me a bag of McDonald’s. “Thought you were hungry,” he told me as I reached forward and took the bag from him with a grateful smile.

“Thanks,” I told him, grateful he had brought food so I wouldn’t have to make myself a sandwich or something. I stood up from the rocking chair I was sitting on, heading toward the front door. I glanced at him over my shoulder as I twisted the door knob. “Are you coming in?”

He followed me to his kitchen without a word. I set the fast-food bag on the counter before I walked over to the fridge, reaching in to grab a cold bottle of water. When I stood up and turned around, I gasped in shock when my nose brushed against Jessie’s rock-hard chest. I sucked in a sharp breath when I looked up and met his eyes.

His eyes were dark, but they seemed like melted chocolate all at once. They were intensely narrowed on me as they ran over my facial features, almost as if he were trying to figure out something for himself. “Jessie?” I asked him softly, my voice tinged with nervousness. I tightened my fingers around the bottle of water in my hand, my heart thumping hard in my chest.

I had always avoided being extremely close to Jessie. I knew he was attractive; I wasn’t blind. I also knew how attracted I was to him; I was very in tune with my body. However, Jessie was the only family I had, and I didn’t want to fuck that up, no matter how I felt about him.

I needed him to continue being my rock. If I lost that, I would lose my sanity.

Jessie closed his eyes and shook his head before he stepped back from me. I swallowed hard, taking a brave step toward him, reaching my hand out to grab onto his bicep. It flexed under my palm. Slowly, he opened his eyes and looked down at me.

To hell with the consequences. I knew no matter what happened in this kitchen, Jessie would never abandon me. He was a man of his word, and he’d promised me he would always be there for me, no matter what.

“Just tell me you feel this, too,” I begged him softly.

Jessie looked down at me with tormented eyes, his jaw clenched so tightly that his jaw was ticking. “Your Lincoln’s girl, West,” he reminded me through gritted teeth.

I stepped up closer to him, pressing my hands to his ripped abdomen, feeling his muscles tighten under my touch. He sucked in a sharp breath and gripped my hips with a bruising grip. “And you and I both know that this thing with Lincoln is just a fling for me,” I reminded him. No matter how I felt about Lincoln, that was all it could be. “Because in a few months, I’ll be fucking gone.”

Jessie’s teeth ground together. “Fuck it all,” he growled.

He wrapped his hand around the back of my neck, drawing my lips up to his as he bent forward, kissing me hungrily, like a man possessed by the devil himself. I kissed him back just as eagerly, a moan slipping past my lips as I fisted his shirt in my hand, tugging him up closer to me.

He lifted me onto his kitchen counter. The bottle of water dropped from my hand as I wrapped my arms around his neck, opening my lips beneath his welcomed assault. He growled softly and shoved my thighs apart before stepping between them, tugging my ass to the edge of the counter.

I gasped at the feel of his hard cock pressing between my thighs, and I shamelessly ground against him, needing friction.

I heard a car pull into his driveway, and Jessie jerked back from me, cursing under his breath. Clenching his jaw, he stepped back from me, turning to stride out of the kitchen. I panted, my chest heaving, my entire body feeling extremely hot and feverish.

“Mother fuck,” Jessie snarled as he peeked out the front door.

I jumped down from the counter and came up behind him, forcing myself to ignore his obvious regret. This was one of the reasons I never made a move toward Jessie when I got back from juvie. I knew he would regret anything he did with me.
