“I’m not sure it’s my place to tell you. Just tell me how you intend to get her to be in the wedding?”

“Give me her number and address and I’ll take care of everything.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea. If she wanted you to have that information she would have told me it was okay to give it to you. I’ve already screwed up. I don’t want to compound the issue by divulging her personal data.”

“Megan, when have I ever let you down?”

“Besides, the time you broke my best friend’s heart?”

Apparently, Megan was pulling no punches today. Ethan flared his nostrils in his mounting frustration. There were few people who knew how to push his buttons and his little sister was one of them. “Let’s not get caught up in the past. I want to make sure you have the wedding of your dreams and that’s not going to happen unless your best friend is by your side, am I right?”

She huffed. “Yes. I’d love that more than anything.”

“And I can make that happen for you. All you have to do is trust that I’ll make things right for you.”

Megan nibbled on her bottom lip, silent for a moment as she seemed to be in deep contemplation. Finally, with a deep sigh, she nodded. “Okay. I’ll give you her number and address, but I swear if you screw this up for me, I’ll never speak to you again.”

She’d been making that threat when she couldn’t get her way with him since she was old enough to talk so he didn’t take it seriously. But he could hear the desperation in her tone. Ethan wanted to make Megan’s wish come true. Anticipation flowed through him as he thought he and Megan could both have what they wanted: Riley back in their lives.

It was close to eleven o’ clock at night when Riley made it back to her house. She enjoyed spending time with Rachel and Eli. She couldn’t help but smile when she thought of her genius nephew one day finding a cure for all the world’s diseases. She wished Rachel would get out more and have fun. But then again, she wasn’t one to talk. Maybe it was time for her to get out more. And to start dating.

She’d enjoyed having coffee with Elliot. He was a sweetheart and was easy to talk to. It didn’t hurt that he was also easy on the eyes as well. She’d agreed to have dinner with him at a later date, but Riley already knew things wouldn’t go much further with them than friendship. The spark wasn’t there. It didn’t mean they couldn’t be friends, however. It was always nice to have a friend to confide in.

She frowned as she pulled into her driveway because she noticed an expensive looking vehicle parked on the street in front of her house. It was a sleek black Range Rover. It looked like one of those custom jobs. Ethan had preferred that model because he claimed he liked the way it handled on the road. Why everything suddenly reminded her of him was starting to wear on her nerves. It couldn’t be his vehicle. He didn’t know where she lived, and he wasn’t the only one who drove that brand of car. It was probably someone visiting one of her neighbors.

As she made her way to her door she stopped in her tracks. Leaning casually against her door as if he had the right to be there was Ethan. He was scrolling through his smart phone as if hanging outside his ex-wife’s house was a normal occurrence. Before she could say anything, he raised his head with smug grin on his face. “Hello.”

It took several moments before Riley found her voice as Ethan continued to eye her as if he were a lion eyeing a gazelle. “Ethan, what the hell are you doing here?”

Again, his lips tilted into that smug smile she would have loved to smack off his face, but she managed to keep her fists clenched firmly at her sides.

“Isn’t it obvious? I’ve come to see you.”

“Megan gave you my address didn’t she?” The sense of betrayal she felt was nothing to the intense beating of her heart from being this close to Ethan. She dared not to take a step closer.

“Don’t be angry with her. We both know I could have gotten it by other means had she not given it to me. It’s chilly out here. Let’s go inside.”

She snorted. “You’re still just as arrogant as I remember. I didn’t invite you over so what makes you think I’d allow you into my house.”

“Because I have a proposition for you which I think you’d be interested in hearing.”

“Anything and everything we’ve had to say to each other was said seven years ago. So how about doing what you do best and walk away.”
