We make it through the day and I’m ready to go home and soak in his tub. Tomorrow I pick up my cat from his lawyer’s office. He’s been hanging around there for the past week.

“I can’t wait to see my kitty again.”

“Soon, baby. Now let’s get out of here before anyone else delays our evening.” We head out of the building’s revolving doors when I feel my hair being yanked back hard.

“Let me go,” I scream just as Lincoln leaps out the other side, having come out behind me.

“Don’t do this, Davis,” he pleads. Seeing the fear in Lincoln’s eyes. “You can take me instead.”

I tilt my head up and find Davis staring at me with wide eyes and a creepy grin.

“I don’t want you dead. I want you to suffer.” He tugs on my hair again and then licks my cheek which makes Lincoln snarl and jolt forward but he freezes. “You’re a dead bitch.” I look at Lincoln as I sense the gun close to my head. Tears fall from my face.

“I love you, Lincoln.”

Before he can reply a shot rings out, but I’m not dead. Instead, I’m falling backward until Lincoln’s strong arms cradle me. My body shakes and I find myself turning around to look for the threat, but he holds me firmly. “No, my flower. No. Don’t look back.”

For the next two hours, the cops and medics are around and I’m in a complete daze. Lincoln froze because Greg had the shot and took it, killing Davis instantly. It’s only after they leave us that Lincoln slides me into the SUV and we drive off. My head rests against his chest.

“Greg, are you in trouble?” I ask him, feeling awful about the mess I caused.

“No, I’m head of Lincoln’s security team, not just your driver. I’m just so sorry that he had a chance to get so close.”

“It’s not your fault. I hadn’t expected him to be that fucking stupid. How he knew we were coming back is a wonder.”

“We’ll be looking into it. Someone had to tell him that we were coming into the office unless he’d been stalking the building for us.”

“I’m sorry you had to kill him.”

“I’m not,” Greg adds. “Don’t worry about me, Ms. Flowers. I promise you he’s not the first body I’ve dropped in my lifetime. Although, I thought it wouldn’t happen once I joined the corporate sector. I used to work for the government.” That makes a lot of sense.

“Are you okay, Lacey? You’re shaking.”

“I’m fine.”

“We’re going to get you into the shower, and then you can lay down.” I don’t know how we arrived at his condo, but we were there before I noticed it. My mind and body aren’t on the same wavelength at the moment. Lincoln carries me straight into the bathroom in the master bedroom, setting me on the large counter while he prepares the water.

“I planned on stripping you, but this isn’t how I had imagined it.” He pouts and I can’t help but laugh.

“This isn’t how I expected it either. Will you shower with me? I’m not ready to be alone.”

“I’ll do almost anything to make you happy.”

“What won’t you do?”

“Let you leave me. That’s not going to happen—ever.” He takes off my clothes with care, lifting my dress over my head and tossing it into the trash. My clothes and body had been covered in Davis’s blood. Something I’ll never forget, and I’ll be forever grateful that Lincoln refused to let me go so I wouldn’t see the mess Greg made of Davis’s head. The officers and the onlookers mentioned the damage. All of it was caught on the building’s security cameras and that’s why we were released in a short time, but I don’t know how to handle this.

Clinging to Lincoln, I let him carry me into the shower while he’s still in his suit. “Take off your clothes.”

“I thought you’d never ask,” he teases, tossing me that wink that does me in. “But first you have to let me go.” Realizing that I haven’t released my death grip around his neck, I dip my head in embarrassment and untangle my hands from around him. He dumps his clothes with an urgency I hadn’t expected to break out into a fit of giggles. “Woman, seeing me naked isn’t something that should make you laugh.”

“It’s… it’s… not that.” I’m practically hyperventilating.

“You think it’s funny, Ms. Flowers? You’re going to have to pay for that.” He grips my hair and pulls me in for a deep kiss, silencing my giggles. Slowly, our kiss turns wild and frantic and we lose ourselves in the shower.

“Thank you,” I whisper, brushing my head against his strong chest. He holds me close without another word, knowing I just need his strength. As the water goes cold, he finally carries us out, wrapping towels around me before setting me down on his bed.
