I come hard on his hand while he threatens me, the tip of his finger strumming my clit until I wail with fresh orgasm. I don’t know if I am going to be a good girl, but I know I am going to be a sore and satisfied one.

“I’m sorry,” Simon Scowl says upon his return, which takes place around thirty minutes after Zayne and I have showered away our contract-shattering sex. We have agreed that Simon must never know what we have done. He’s not the sort of guy to overlook contractural breeches. He is not a relaxed, chill manager. He is a brutal beast happy to kill if he is sufficiently annoyed.

I should be more afraid, but the kind of endorphins flowing through my body right now do not allow for fear. Zayne makes me feel brave. I’ve slept with a lot of men in my life. I’ve never been the sort of woman to turn down an opportunity for a hot liaison. That’s made some people call me a slut over the years, but I consider myself a physical hedonist. I’ve never been in the position to give or receive long term commitment, so when hot opportunities presented themselves, I took them. I’ve never felt this way afterward, though. Zayne has left what might be an indelible mark on me. I feel him inside me, physically. I feel the ache he left in his wake. But I also feel a shift in feeling. There’s a softness in me that wasn’t there before. When I look at him or think about him, I feel a fluttering of excitement and not just between my thighs. This is new to me, and I’m not entirely sure what to do with it.

Upon Simon’s return, I take a quick step back behind Zayne, though I do notice that Simon Scowl is now wearing a tuxedo jacket, as if that might make him appear any more civilized.

“I lost my temper,” he says. “It was unacceptable, and I will try to ensure it does not happen again. Understand, Lyric, when you speak rudely to me, all I see is dinner begging to be eaten. I have given you the world. Nay, I have given you the universe, and all you need do is play along for three years. If you can do what we need you to do, and be what we need you to be, you will never need to work again in your entire existence. Do you understand what a gift has been laid at your feet? And how you trample it with ingratitude?”

“If I say no, will you try to kill me again?”

I hear Zayne groan, but fuck it. I refuse to be afraid of Simon Scowl. A thousand things could kill me at any moment. I am not going to bow down to this narcissistic lion alien.

Simon Scowl’s claws flex, then retract.

“I am going to hand over your physical day-to-day management to Zayne. He appears to be able to resist the urge to murder you, whereas I doubt I will be able to fight the desire for much longer. I will interface with Zayne, provide orders, and oversee the financial and managerial negotiations. You will focus on your performances and appearances. Deal?”

“Deal.” I shrug. Seeing less of a murderous beast while getting to bang my hot bodyguard is kind of the perfect arrangement, if you think about it.

“Good. It would be best if I did not have to come back to see you. And I will have to come back and see you if you renege on any one of your many hundreds of contractually obligated appearances and sponsored advertisements. You are here to work, Lyric Walker. You will work.”

“Agreed,” I say. I am compliant because I am internally aching and I am also pretty sure some of Zayne’s dragon alien seed is currently making its way down my inner thigh.

“Good. I’ll send over an amendment to the contract. I suggest you familiarize yourself with the entirety of the document. You seem surprised by many of the claws. I mean, clauses.”

With that, he leaves again. How absolutely perfect. I turn to Zayne, a huge grin on my face.

“How awesome is this?”

Zayne does not look as happy as I feel, which is unfortunate. I feel my heart sinking. I thought he’d be happy to find out he can be with me without the aggressive lion alien ripping him up, but apparently not.

“What’s wrong?”

“We are playing a dangerous game,” Zayne says. “If he discovers we are intimate, I will be fired.”

“If you get fired, I’ll walk. And then what? I don’t care what he says about me being replaceable. The tickets were sold to people who want to see me. I’m special.”

“You are.” He chuckles. “But you have to understand by now that your contract is about far more than just singing for audiences. You’re a product to be sold in every way. Perhaps even physically.”
