He put his hand on her thigh, not mentioning that he’d been waiting for her to emotionally heal. As much as the battle had hurt everyone involved, it had hurt her in a special way. It had been her first experience with personal losses, and unlike other alphas, she hadn’t been raised to expect it. She hadn’t had the resources to emotionally deal with it. She’d needed the break.

Or so he’d thought, anyway. Now, it seemed like she needed action.

“It also wouldn’t hurt to ask them what they know about the mages in this town,” she continued, clearly on a roll. “If only to help us avoid them for now. Tristan and Niamh are great about some things, but they don’t have the network Nessa and Sebastian did. We could be missing a whole lot that goes on in this town.”

“Agreed. No more leaving the house without backup, either. We’ll need to arm people with potions, just in case, and keep an eye out. I’d rather overreact than get another surprise.”

She looked out the window. “How’d they even know we were there? Do they own it?”

“They might. Or a shifter stopping in for coffee, or…” He paused. “Or it might’ve been the woman at the counter who waved me to the front of the line. If she was a low-powered shifter, I wouldn’t have noticed unless I was looking for it. In that busy spot…I definitely wasn’t looking for it. I’m not acclimated to the population of this place.”

“I can see that after spending so much time in O’Briens and your hometown.”

“Or it could’ve been someone else. I had to posture in a couple of instances, and it’s noticeable to someone who knows what they’re looking for.”

She slid her hand up his arm and to his shoulder before dusting her fingertips along the skin of his neck. “I like how noticeable you are,” she purred.

Tingles worked at the base of his spine and his groin tightened. He pulled a hand from the wheel and rubbed it along her upper thigh, squeezing.

“Why were you posturing, though?” Her light touch traced along his stubble. “Is it because you worried about what I would do to defend my claim?”

He swallowed, painfully hard now. “Something like that.”

“I felt your annoyance through the bond, followed by your release of power, and turned to see what was going on.” She pulled her hand away and then reached lower, yanking at the top button on his fly. Not one to pass up a good time, he slid his butt down a little to give her better access. “Diana commented that you seem to like public displays of affection, and that was good because I clearly like them, too. She was right. I do like them.”

He took over the buttons, and she reached in to wrap her fingers around his length.

“I really like them.” She pulled him out and stroked, slowly at first, then speeding up. “Turn left here.”

He complied, though going straight would take them in the direction of the house.

“When you postured with that woman, whatever expression I wore made Diana blush,” she breathed, rubbing him up and down. “I’ll give you a hint—I was thinking sexy thoughts. Take a right here.”

The roads reduced to three lanes, still wide but not as crowded at this time of day.

“Ten and two,” she said, pulling her seatbelt away from her chest and getting her other arm out.

He adjusted his grip on the steering wheel, starting to breathe heavily now.

“At the light, get in the left turning lane. After you turn, just go straight.”

She bent down into his lap, and he groaned as her hot, wet tongue moved over him. It circled before she sucked him in as far as she could go, the angle not giving her the usual range, although he was not at all complaining. He focused on driving straight as her hand followed her mouth up and down. Her tongue swirled, and it was a struggle to keep his eyes from rolling back in his head. The lane came up, and he took it, stopping at a red light, gripping her hair.

She hummed softly, and the vibration went straight down to his balls. He dropped his head back for a second, closing his eyes, groaning in pure bliss.

A horn sounded, and he came to, belatedly noticing a truck to his right. The driver, a younger guy, glanced over as the person behind honked. He did a double take, his eyes widening as Austin took his foot off the brake. Then he flipped Austin a thumbs-up.

The voyeur situation, and how cool his mate was, accelerated his lust.

“Faster, Jess,” he said, hand still in her hair.

She moaned, tearing at her own button and sliding her hand down the front of her pants. Both hands worked now, one on him, one on herself. Her hot, wet mouth repeatedly sucked him in and out. The pleasure mounted. It was hard to concentrate.
