As time ticks by, I find myself taking deep breaths and scrolling through social media. I was feeling wild and reckless earlier, but as each second past the time I told him to be here turns into minutes, I grow a little saddened. Maybe I was too forward. Maybe he was confused. Maybe he’s shyer than I realized. Maybe this is for the best. Hooking up with him could get messy.

God, I hate how attractive I find guys like him. I hate that I have a very difficult time walking away when I spot a man with rosy cheeks and lowered eyes.

I don’t want a submissive man. That’s not my type at all. I love watching a reticent man turn into an animal in the bedroom. I’ve found that the quiet ones, the ones keeping their distance and not bragging about conquests, are not only the most attentive lovers, but they’re also the wildest. There’s just something about their cocks popping out from the restriction of their clothes that makes them feral beasts in the bedroom. Then, once they’re dressed again, they turn right back into that shy man, unlikely to call or turn up expecting more.

That’s what I’m looking for in Jude Morris—a wild night, a good time, and an easy goodbye.

Nothing more.

Hayden: Do you really think he likes me?

I smile down at my phone.

Me: Yes, I do. The man would be a fool to miss what was right in front of him.

Hayden: Maybe he can’t see me because you’re standing in the way.

Ouch. Damn it. That hurts. She must really like the guy if she’s sending that message.

Me: And I’m certain he only has eyes for you. Next time you catch him looking, try smiling at him instead of snarling and holding a grudge.

I know a lot of my friend’s hesitancy is because Quinten kicked us out of the first shooting class. Okay, technically he only kicked me out, but she wasn’t going to let that man shoo me away alone. She left the class, too, only to get a call from him later with him insisting that we both come back to the next class. She’s clinging to that grudge like a lifeline, and I’m certain it’s because she’s afraid of putting herself out there and getting rejected.

I know men, and that means I know Quinten wouldn’t do that. I don’t know what’s holding him back from making a move on her, but her growly attitude isn’t helping the situation.

Hayden: I’ll think about it. I’m going to bed. I have work in the morning.

Me: Night.

As her plans have seeped into my bones, I yawn as I stand from the couch, carrying my empty wine glass to the sink before switching off the lights as I make my way to my bedroom. I refuse to feel disappointed and plaster a fake smile on my face as I walk down the hallway.

I jolt at the sound of the knock coming from my front door, suddenly feeling shy myself and a little uneasy.

I’d already given up on him, allowed the discontent to pass.

Slowly, I make my way to the door, looking through the peephole just in case it’s someone other than Jude, only to find him rocking back and forth on his feet nervously.

My body sings with possibilities as I unlock the door and tug it open.

His cheeks are redder than they were at any other point tonight, and I bite my lip to keep from talking, wanting him to live in that embarrassment just a little longer. I know it makes me evil, but I just can’t help myself.

His eyes lift, tracing the bare skin of my legs, and I feel his gaze like a sensual touch on my exposed skin. He swallows when his eyes make it to my middle, then he licks his lips when he sees the thin tank top I have on. I’m not wearing a bra, and that was purposeful in the anticipation of him taking my offer to show up tonight.

“I… umm… you—”

I put him out of his misery by clamping my arms around his neck, lifting up on my toes, and pressing my mouth against his.

Chapter 5

Jude

She tastes like sweet red wine and mistakes.

I open my mouth at the insistence of hers, moaning at the first brush of her tongue against mine. I had been sitting in my car, willing my eager erection to go away before managing the courage to knock on her front door. Apparently, there was no reason to have wasted that time because I’m already a steel pipe in my jeans again.

The door snaps closed behind me, making me realize I’m so distracted, she’s had the ability to drag me inside. One hand is tangled in her hair, the other gripping her ass like a lifeline.

I pause for a second, pulling my face away to stare down at her already swollen lips. Jesus, is this really happening right now?
