The younger guard started to reach for the taser on his belt, but the older one placed a hand over it.

“Works for us. You have a nice day, sir.”

“Back at you.” Placing his sunglasses back on when the door slid open, Doom put out a hand to prevent the door from closing. “Stop by the club sometime. I’ll buy you two a beer. Tell whoever’s at the door Doom invited you.”

“We’ll do that.” The older guard nodded. “Thanks.”

When he left the building, he saw Wizard’s, Shade’s, and Moon’s bikes parked next to his. They had been at the club when he left.

Doom swung a leg over his bike. “What are you three doing here?”

Wizard took a drag off his cigarette. “Wanted to make sure you didn’t get your ass arrested.”

“How’d you know I was coming here?” Taking his rings out of his pocket, he slid them back onto his fingers.

“Shade figured it out when you went to Margarita’s room to make sure she packed all her shit.” Wizard held his hand out to Moon. “Pay up.”

Doom looked at them questionably as Moon took a wad of cash out of his vest pocket to smack it down on Wizard’s palm.

“What was the bet?” He wasn’t surprised about the bet. Moon couldn’t go a day without betting on something.

“We bet where you would give Haven blowback for Tink. I bet you’d get her at work; Moon bet after work in the parking lot.”

Doom looked at Shade. “You didn’t bet?”

“No.”

“Why not?” he asked curiously.

Shade shrugged. “No reason. We ready?”

“Just a second.” Doom got off his bike to take off his jacket, spreading it across the hood of Tink’s rental car.

He then got back on his bike and started his engine. “Now we can go.”

“Sure you don’t want to take a piss on her tire before we leave?”

“Nope. That should give everyone in there my message.”

Doom was ready to put his bike in gear when he saw Shade holding his hand out. Both Moon and Wizard forked their cash over.

“What in the fuck did you bet on this time?”

Shade put the cash in the upper front pocket of his vest. “I bet you would do something to warn everybody she worked with not to fuck with your woman. Laying your jacket on her car shows not only your protection but that she has The Last Riders’.”

“How’d you know I was going to do something? Hell, I didn’t plan on doing it until it occurred to me just now. I wanted the fuckers who weren’t in the breakroom to get my message.”

Shade flicked his kickstand up, preparing to ride. “Because it’s what I would have done.”

CHAPTER 47

THE SOUP

Arden’s hands went to her hips when she saw Doom’s jacket spread over the hood of her car. She was going to kill him, she promised herself, hurriedly snatching the garment off to bundle it in her arms.

She gritted her teeth behind the smile she gave her coworkers who were walking past, looking at her curiously.

“Have a great evening,” she called out, getting inside her car and shutting the door. “I’m going to kill him,” she promised herself again.

She started the car and fumed all the way to her parents’ home.

Arriving home, she left the jacket in the car to go inside. Using her key, she found Luc sitting at the dining room table, doing his homework.

“What’s up?” she asked her brother. Usually, her mother was sitting in her chair at this time of day.

“Nothing. Just finished an assignment.” Luc closed his Chromebook to pick up the dishes he must have used for a snack.

Self-conscious, Arden remained standing at the table while he took the dishes into the kitchen. When Luc came back to pick up his laptop, she made another attempt at a conversation.

“How was the game and the trip?”

“It was okay.”

Arden had expected Luc to tell her how much fun it was.

“You didn’t have a good time?”

“It wasn’t the same without Dad.” Luc started for the stairs.

Arden followed him.

“I’m sorry. I thought you would have a good time with your friends since Dad couldn’t go.”

Luc paused with his foot on the first step to stare at her angrily. “It wasn’t only because Dad didn’t go; you didn’t go. All three of us used to go together. It wasn’t the same.”

Arden placed her hand over his. “I didn’t go because I thought you’d rather go with Puck and Buck instead.”

Luc jerked his hand away. “You could have asked me. I would have told you to give my ticket away too.”

“You’re right; I should have asked you. I’m sorry.” Contritely, she tried to touch his arm to prevent him from going upstairs, but he wrenched away from her touch as if stung.

“It’s the same ole, same ole with you, Arden. I wish you would quit treating me like a twelve-year-old. What do I have to do for you to stop treating me as a kid?” Disregarding her, he started climbing the steps.
