“You eat, too,” she insisted, and Dirk alternated between feeding her and himself.

After several bites, Cynthia asked, “Have you been a Daddy before?”

“I’ve always been a Daddy. My mother and I had quite a tumultuous relationship when I was young. She was very dominant in our household. We clashed a lot.”

“Was your father a Little?”

“A Little? No. He was brilliant in financial matters, but didn’t have a clue about real life. My mom was always in charge.”

He fed her more soup before continuing, “But you asked me about being a Daddy. I’ve had some relationships with Littles. Each time, we both knew that it wasn’t the type of connection that would survive. I treasure those women because they taught me so much.”

Subconsciously, Cynthia wrinkled her nose. She didn’t like the idea that he ‘treasured’ anyone else.

“No bristling, Little girl. I don’t love them now—I don’t think I ever did. I cared about them deeply and still wish them well. Two of the three have met their Daddies and are living their best lives. The other is a married mother of three sons. I don’t think she has time to yearn for the special relationship that was so important several years ago.”

“Really? You wouldn’t go back to them if they invited you?”

“No, sweetheart. I wouldn’t.”

Allowing him to feed her, she savored the soup and melty sandwich as she relaxed, leaning against his hard torso. Cynthia wanted to ask a million more questions, but if he didn’t love them and they had moved on with their lives, did the time they’d spent together really matter now?

When Dirk pressed his lips against her temple, she decided to only focus on the present. Cynthia didn’t know how much time she’d have with him. You better treasure every moment.

Cynthia had learned not to ignore that tiny voice in the back of her head that gave advice. It had screamed at her as she’d plugged in the fated flash drive.

“I think I’m ready,” she reported.

“Ready for what, Cindy girl?” he asked with a confused look.

“I think I’m ready to call you Daddy.”

After dropping the spoon into the bowl, Dirk pressed a fiery kiss to her lips as he hugged her close. When he lifted his mouth from hers, he scanned her face as if looking for clues that she was telling the truth or scamming him. Her heart ached that he was so used to dealing with people who lied and misled others.

“I promise to always tell you the truth, Daddy. Even if I’d rather not.”

“Thank you. That earns you another kiss, sweetheart.”

Cynthia wrapped her arms around his neck and lifted her lips in a silent invitation. She held onto him tightly as his mouth nibbled hers. How he knew exactly what would excite her the most, Cynthia couldn’t figure out. Sweet, passionate, hard, soft—her Daddy’s kisses were the best. When he lifted his head, she stared at him, discombobulated by the way he always sensed what she needed.

“Our lovemaking will be incredible, Cindy girl. When you’re rested and you’ve recovered from being on the run and staying in the jail, I will make you mine.” He held a finger over her lips when she opened her mouth to assure him she was perfectly ready now.

“Not now. You’re still exhausted.”

Her body answered that suggestion with a gigantic yawn that Cynthia tried to cover by slapping her hand over her open mouth. She started to shake her head to deny his statement but remembered she’d just promised to tell him the truth. Forcing herself, she nodded.

“Good girl. Tonight, a shower and bed. Tomorrow? We’ll see what happens. Have you been tested lately?”

Cynthia nodded again before whispering, “When the nurse practitioner at the health center heard about my untrustworthy husband, she suggested a preventative round of testing for a variety of things.”

“And you haven’t had sex since?” he probed.

“No.”

“I was tested after my last partner as well. Are you on birth control?”

“Not since my split from my husband. I could start…” Her voice died away as she realized without a job, health insurance, and being able to leave the house, getting medicine would be difficult.

“We’ll be very careful, sweetheart, until we can have you protected. I’ll contact the nurse practitioner and ask her for a prescription for you.”

“I don’t have any money to buy them,” she confessed.

“I think I can cover it for you. For now, let’s get you showered and in bed. Can you stay awake long enough for me to put everything away?” he asked.

Automatically, she nodded to answer his question. When Dirk scooped her off his lap and set her back in her chair, his strength boggled her as Dirk moved her so effortlessly. Cynthia didn’t process his words completely for several minutes.

“Cindy girl, I’m going to put a card on the refrigerator with our address, so when the court officer calls to check on you, you’ll have the information written and won’t have to struggle to remember.”
