“No, it wasn’t an act for me either.”

“Good, because I could just as easily believe the same things of you.”

“Yeah I know, especially since it was my dad who killed yours.”

“There’s something you need to see. So what happened after the phone call?”

“Okay, so I hung up on him after telling him I didn’t believe him. What I didn’t realize is that he had to have been tracking my location. Dad had a tracker on my phone and car from before.”

“So that’s how they knew where you were.” I took her into the bedroom and sat her on the bed before retrieving the package the lawyer had given me. “Read this.”

I left the room and gave her time alone. By the end of this night, I was going to tell her all of it. Including the fact that I was the one who killed her dad. I wasn’t expecting that shit to go down easy, but I wasn’t going to let her go either. What a fucking mess.

When I thought enough time had passed I went back to her. She was sitting on the bed with the papers in her hand and tears in her eyes.

“My dad murdered yours and stole your legacy. How could you ever forgive me?” I went to sit beside her and take her in my arms.

“Don’t be stupid. Besides, I think in the end I won, I got you.” I kissed her hair and prepared to break her heart. If I could shield her from this I would, but I wasn’t about to live the rest of my life with her with this shit hanging over my head.

“I don’t want it, any of it. It belongs to you.” She held the papers out to me.

“No, I don’t want it, I never did.” Maybe if she believed that she would believe that I hadn’t killed her dad to get my hands on what was his. There was only one reason for me plotting to take his miserable life since I was a kid. He’d killed my dad. No one is allowed to fuck with what’s mine and get away with it.

That’s my creed, my own personal law. A motherfucker fucks with me, I’m gonna fuck him all the way up. If I can get her to see that it had nothing to do with her then we’d be good, but somehow I just didn’t see it being that easy.

“But Gavin, as my husband it will be yours anyway.” She gave me her first smile and I decided to fuck with her one last time before I had to wipe that shit off her face.

“Did you just ask me to marry you? I thought that was my job.” I bumped foreheads and she actually grinned. I hope to hear that sound again for the rest of my life.

“Yeah, but if I wait for you our kids would be in college before you got around to it.”

“Kids…” She smiled and nodded while leading my hand to her tummy.

“Babe you’re…” She nodded again and I stumbled off the bed.

“I... shit, you’re sure?”

“Yeah.” She started to tear up.

‘That’s why I wanted to go see Cathy today. I wanted to get a test from the pharmacy but I didn’t want you to know.”

“Isn’t it too soon?”

“Nope, I missed my period. There’s this test you can take right away, but I already knew. Are you happy?” She got up from the bed and came to me. My fucking knees were shaking.

Change of plans. I can’t tell her this shit now. I’ll tell her on our tenth anniversary, no make that the twentieth. By then she’d be all in. I’d have planted another five in her, where’s she going?

“Ma.” This fucking lady. “Don’t give him that.”

“Why not? He likes it.”

“I liked it better when your ass wasn’t so friendly with my wife.” She snorted and went back to spoiling her grandson.

“Where’s my kid?”

“Which one?” She knew damn good and well I only called one of the four demon spawns in my house ‘kid’. Four kids in three years, the first set were twins. Three boys and one little angel that was her mother from her pretty little dark curls to those eyes that defied reason.

The boys were all me, which meant they looked like my dad, which is why ma spoils the shit out of them. Especially Junior. I told Chloe what would happen if she named that kid after me, after my dad. Ma thinks she owns him. As she puts it, she went wrong with me somewhere along the way and this was her chance to get it right.

Little Gavin was born almost nine months to the day I first took his mother. He and his sister came into the world kicking and screaming on a cool fall day. It was also the day my wife swore she was going to divorce me, or kill me.
