Pulling my glock I peeped through the side of the curtain out into the dark. I saw the shadow move closer to the house and looked for others. Once I was sure there was only one I crouched beneath the window and made my way to the backdoor, my intention to run around the side of the house to cut off whoever was out there.

How did they know which room she was in? Shit, that was obvious; she probably had a light on in there. I stepped lightly as I stayed close to the house even slowing my breathing down so as not to make even the slightest sound. I turned the corner gun raised and took the shot.

The brush rustled where the body dropped and I walked over to stand over whomever it was that I’d just shot in the shoulder. I’d purposely left him alive. I needed answers. I could hear running feet coming from inside the house. “Stay inside.” I didn’t have to raise my voice because I knew she was at the window peeping out.

I kicked the asshole in the ribs to get his attention after picking up the gun he’d dropped. In eight years I’ve never had anyone come to my home to take me out. I’ve had run-ins of course, but no one was ever stupid enough to bring this shit to my front door. This was twice in one day. No need to guess who was behind this shit.

I picked him up by his jacket’s collar and pulled my phone as I dragged him around to the garage. “Danny, I’ve got a situation, get over here.” I dropped the asshole on the cold cement floor and flipped on the overhead light.

“Who sent you?” He was holding his shoulder and biting a hole in his lip so as not to cry out. He was a greasy looking fuck and I’d never seen him before so I took a guess. “Anymore of your MK buddies sniffing around my place?” He thought it was more prudent to glare holes in my fucking face than to answer. I was in there with him, but my mind was inside the house. I tied his ass to the chain that I had hanging from the ceiling and went inside to make sure all was clear. I heard her coming and halted her in her tracks. “Back in your room and lock the door. Don’t come out unless you hear my voice.”

I should arm her, but I’m not that stupid. Not only is she my enemy’s kid, she’s also a very ornery female. She went back to the room and closed and locked the door and I went back outside and searched around the house.

I heard my boys burning asphalt coming my way, and waited for them to get here. She must be scared out of her mind, but I didn’t have time to coddle her. I wasn’t sure that the threat was contained.

The nearest neighbor was a good half a mile away and there was always somebody hunting some fuck around here so even if the shot was heard they wouldn’t call the law.

Danny came in and there were lights from about ten bikes on my drive before the boys followed him in. “Watch him I’ll be right back.” Shit, this is why I have no attachments. A man can’t be distracted in the midst of battle.

I walked in the house calling for her. “Kid where you at?” She came running down the hallway white as a damn sheet. “What happened who was that, did you get him?” I didn’t know what to make of her. One minute she was a warrior and the next she was a scared little girl.

“You okay?” my stern no nonsense tone seemed to snap her out of it and she took a deep breath and pulled it together. “Yes I’m fine.” That’s my girl. The fuck!

“Good, go back to bed and stay there no matter what you hear. If you see anything you’re not supposed to I might have to cap your ass so you better mind me.” I turned and headed back out leaving her looking after me with her mouth hanging open. You’re not attracted to a kid you fuck. So why do I want to hold her and reassure her and…better leave that shit alone.

Back in the garage the boys had already gone through my visitor’s pockets and he looked a little rougher than when I’d left. I didn’t bother looking at Danny because if he’d done it the fuck would be dead.

Danny’s one of those people, who believes that old story about my dad hook line and sinker. He has it in his head that we’re gonna take the shit back and now with Drexel out of the way, I can only imagine his mind is working overtime. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that his sister befriended the kid either, but that’s for another time.
