“Have you lost your mind?” I hiss low.

He looks at me with a puzzled expression. Lifting out of the pool, he sits on the edge and places a hand on my thigh. I glare at him as my anger rises.

“What did I do now?”

“You decided I’m quitting my job without my knowledge. How dare you?”

He has the nerve to give me a smile. “You hated that place. You told me so. I want you to be able to focus on what you love. I’m worth enough for you not to have to work. I’d prefer if you didn’t. However, if you want to paint full-time, that’s better than working in the district. Come on, Chlo.”

“Gregor, I understand you have money, but you should have run this by me.”

The man is worth trillions. He’s being very modest. However, I don’t plan to sit on my ass for the rest of my life.

He cups my face and kisses my lips. “I’ll keep that in mind for next time, but your resignation goes in this week,” he says against my lips.

“There he is. The man I know.”

“And love. The man you know and love, baby. I’ll always do what’s best for you. Focus on your art. I’ll handle the rest.”

I sigh, what’s the point? “We should talk.”

“About?”

“You want me to know what life will be like with you. We should talk about what that means.”

“It means we live the dream. The life we talked about having together.”

I clamp my mouth shut. That dream included children, a home in the burbs, and me being a stay-at-home mom. It was a dream all right. A dream I don’t know if I still want and honestly never thought I would have. I’m not that same twenty-five-year-old.

“Trust me.”

I sigh and rub my forehead. “Okay.”

Chapter 38

Really Happening

Chloe

I sit in the living room on the phone with Eric as we nail down details for the wedding and showing. Gregor sits next to me going over some work documents. He looks so handsome as he focuses on his work.

This seems so normal. Like we do this all the time. We were having some family time until Eileen took Chloe to put her down for a nap.

“Thanks so much, Eric.”

“No problem, ma’am.”

“Lord, can you stop calling me ma’am? My husband is old. I’m not.”

Eric chuckles as Gregor looks up from the docs in front of him to glare at me. I stick my tongue out at him and wiggle my toes under his thigh. He wraps his hand around my ankle and gives it a gentle squeeze.

“Mrs. Hennessy,” Eric chuckles over the phone.

“No, Chloe or Cee is fine.”

“Chloe, I have the approved invitation for the showing. I’ll send that to Michelle now. You’ll let me know about the wedding invitation after you show Mr. Hennessy and make a decision. I just sent you the menus for the showing and the wedding reception. I have you booked for a tasting for both once you return to New York.

“Give me a day to get you those paint samples and designs for little Miss Chloe’s room in New York. Will there be anything else?”

“No, that’s a lot. I know my husband is already working you to death.”

Eric laughs in my ear. “I’m here if you need me. Call me if you need anything else. No matter the time.”

“Thanks, hon.”

“No problem. Have a good evening.”

“You too.”

Gregor looks at me as I hang up. “You love teasing me. Are you sure you’re ready for the results?”

I bite my lip, getting ready to give him a naughty reply. However, his phone rings, drawing his attention. He looks at the device and frowns.

“I need to take this,” he murmurs and stands to leave the room.

I watch after him, wondering what that’s about. My mind goes to Ally. I dial her number and wait for her to pick up.

“Hello?”

“Why the heck do you always sound like you’re fucking or running a marathon when I call?”

“I’m twenty-two. Have you ever thought I might be fucking?”

“Ally,” I drag out.

She laughs, still sounding breathless. “I’m messing with you. You can always dish it out, but you can’t take it. What’s up?”

“I’m checking in. How are you?”

“I’m fine. Your timing sucks though. I’m heading out the door. Can I call you later?”

“Fine,” I huff.

“Love you, Chlo.”

“Yeah, I love you too, big head.”

I hang up and roll my eyes. I can’t wait to get home and find out what’s been going on with her.

Gregor

“What’s up?” I say into the phone.

“That deal in Vegas, it’s about to fall through,” Cane grumbles. “The investor group wants to pull out.”

“You tell Clay about this?”

“He did,” Clay says, letting me know he’s on the line too. “I say fuck them. Gutter has a contact who would be interested.”

“More Lost Souls?” I lift a brow as if he can see me.
